Not every series of first person shooters gets a proper sequel like Call of Duty or Halo. Instead some FPS games come on the market, maybe get a sequel if we're lucky and then sadly fade into the pre-rendered low textured sunset. Well, I'm here this week to make sure these 6 unloved FPS gems get one last glance from fans of the genre.
Which games would you like to see in Part 2 & 3? Let me know!
I had been thinking of starting a thread about the classic FPS games versus those that never made it into the limelight but deserved recognition. I will watch this when I get home (currently at work) and will share my thoughts.
Good video, I have to saw Outlaws by Lucas Arts intrigues me, I need to check that out sometime.
You know, thinking about forgotten FPS's or anything I guess in general really makes you wonder how the scene would be today if say they succeeded, or Half Life fizzled (no Valve, no steam :O), or Daikatana was considered to be an even better game than the Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time.
Really liked this video, reminded me of some really good times with System Shock and Quake...
Loved the bit about Project: Snowblind. I find the "this was originally intended to be"-type of stories about certain games to be terribly interesting, and doesn't hurt that I also love Deus Ex.
Thanks!
Really cool video. I worked at CompUSA from '98-'07 & I had forgotten a lot of these. I always thought Outlaws had a really cool look to it. Rise of the Triad comes to mind as a forgotten FPS, I never hear anyone mention that one these days.
Ok, just gave this a watch. I admit, I grabbed a beer when you pulled out the frosty glass and have been sitting back and enjoying myself. And you have excellent taste in metal t-shirts. But on to the games...
Thank you, thank you, thank you for reminding me of the name of the Star Trek FPS games that I had heard of but never gotten to try. I knew there were good Star Trek games, but despite having solid Star Wars FPS in Dark Forces, I could not remember the Star Trek equivalent.
As for No One Lives Forever 2...well, I must admit that I have only played the original, and despite enjoying the humor, it just didn't impress me much. I suppose I should give the sequel a go some time.
Since we were discussing forgotten FPS, I was a little shocked to see the Thief series and SiN. But hey, I was already into the genre at the time, so I remember them being big deals and never forgot about them. I even recently gave my brother a copy of Thief. But for modern FPS fans who lack the experience, thank you for showing them some of the big names they missed.
I'll have to check out Project Snowblind. I found Deus Ex: Invisible War to be generic, though I still had a good time with it. That said, I also had a good time with the N64 port of Daikatana as well as Mortyr, so what does that say about me?
Anyway, future suggestions. I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on games like Shadow Warrior, Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, Postal 2, and the Blood series. Also, while I don't think it would quite fit the feel, since it's a strange hybrid, check out Pathways into Darkness sometime.
Another awesome series. I like FPSes of the 90s sometimes even more than their modern, graphically enhanced counterparts.
A real obscure one I played back in the day was one called Lethal Tender by Pie In The Sky Software came out around 1993-1994. The story was kinda cheesy but it had a lot of blood, a lot of action, different weapons and keys, and some neat locations.
One that's a bit more well known would be the Delta Force series by Novalogic. There were about 5 or 6 games in that series (maybe more) dating from the late 90s to 2005. Of those, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down might be the best to try, because it received PS2 and Xbox ports in addition to the PC original.
Also, Dream Theater fan? I'm more into Rush myself, I know DT considers them a huge influence. Clockwork Angels is amazing.
