wow....I've played alot.
Most snes & ps1 rpg's. I'm sure I missed a few, and this doesn't include any japanese or european exclusives. but I've played alot (and owned most of them at one time or another) and I've only emulated a handful.

Most genesis, sega cd, and saturn stuff. about 10 ps2 rpgs, couple on DC, and 5 or 6 NES titles. I don't know how many exactly...but alot....

Now how many have I beaten....not nearly as many of coarse.

some i can remember....
Earthbound, Lufia 1, FF 1-9, Okami, Zelda 1 2 snes gb & wind waker, Tales of the Abyss, Shining Force 1 2 III & cd, FF Tactics, Diablo, Suikoden, Xenogears....there are more.

I've played a lot of PC RPGs (Ultima Online consuming 10 years of my life) and numerous ones spread out over the various consoles, but mostly completed the Saturn ones (SF3, PDS, Dark Savior, Dragon Force, etc.). More recently I've been playing less "pure" RPG games and more action/dungeon crawlers. I just don't have the time nor the patience to invest in the same old plots and systems that I see in so many RPGs.

I think of it more as a 3rd person shooter with RPG elements, kinda like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night isn't a straight up RPG. But I did my best to include a few in my list., like Nox and the two Elder Scrolls titles I've played. I just don't think as many American RPGs made it onto consoles. Most of the ones I mentioned were PC originally, and though a few were eventually ported, most will never see the light of day on a console.

You know, I also forgot Arcanum...interesting little game, that one.
Actually, I initially was surprised by how shooter-like Mass Effect was, but I'm on my third playthrough now and the game is definitely a straight up rpg with a combat system that does a good job of SIMULATING a third person shooter. I win most of my battles by using my party's biotic and engineer abilities to weaken enemies(which is kind of like casting rpg spells), then I just gun them down.

Plus, equipment upgrades(in true rpg fashion)make a huge difference. I did my second playthrough with explosive round ammo upgrades on my shotgun and sniper rifle and I had enemies literally bouncing around the environments. Love those ragdoll physics. So it's more about powers and equipment than skill. Hardcore shooter fans would probably get bored with Mass Effect. I don't mind, the combat is still far more entertaining than a typical, turn based system would be. It's nice to have realistic looking combat with you and your characters moving and fighting in real time. This is one of the flaws of japanese rpgs. The fights look more like chess matches than real fights.

To be honest, I played through Mass Effect twice. I never used engineering or biotic skills, stuck to pistols and shotguns. All combat was done at point blank, for the most part. And shooters like Crysis are starting to incorporate different styles of upgrading weapons...I still see the game as a shooter with RPG aspects, but I suppose it's all in how you play the game.

Considering you spend a large portion of the game interacting with characters, being filled in on story elements and exploring, I'd say the rpg element is pretty dominant. It's really the character interaction that plays such a large part of how the game plays out that makes it seem more like an rpg to me.

The combat may seem very shooter like, but it really just serves the purpose of moving the story along. In most dedicated shooters, the combat is pretty much the purpose of the game, with the story added a little spice to it(see Gears of War). Although there are some shooters with great stories like Half Life 2(which I need to play one of these days), but there still isn't such a large amount of character interaction and your decisions don't have much impact, unlike Mass Effect where you are constantly making decisions that affect the story(which is essentially what role playing is)

Plus, combat in Mass Effect never gets as challenging and tough as a real shooter. It would lose a large part of its intended audience if it did

I like how you're arguing about differing ways to play the game.

I actually didn't do much talking. To me the game was talking to get different quests and then combat. Lots of combat. I preferred to blast my way through as much as possible. Combat was really what I focused on, since it happened so much in the main plot.

Now lets see here i have completed quite a few

Amiga

Champions of Krynn
Death Knights of Krynn

Mega Drive

Shining Force 2
Buck Rogers : Countdown to Doomsday

PSX

Final Fantasy 9

Pc

Diablo
Diablo II
Fallout
Fallout 2
Neverwinter Nights
Kotor
Anachronox
Temple of Elemental Evil
Anachronox
Planescape Torment
Vtm : Bloodlines
Restricted Area

Then there are rpgs that while i havent finished it i have played a lot

Baldur´s Gate i like that game but a fair warning if you mean to finish it do not stop playing now i know you can take a break from most rpgs and jump back in but somehow thats impossible for me when it comes to baldurs gate.

Daggerfall/Morrowind

Great games its just that the main story isnt as fun as running quests for the various guilds so i usually end up playing until my character is almost unbeatable and at that point i´ve played so much that im tired of the game.

Might and Magic 6 and 7

Now i admit these might be a guilty pleasure but initially they start out good then at later levels there are just way too many monsters around and the only way to survive is too just shoot them with a bow from a distance and at that point i usually quit.
