Who possibly benefits from this conflict within Syria? Who would not like to see a quick end to the rebellion? Who loves seeing Syria pre-occupied with its own problems instead of being prepared to assist its long-standing partner, Iran?

Here are some clues:

The reports about her death seem to lend a lot of credence to the theory I have heard kicked around that the Syrian military is deliberately targeting embedded journalists.

I believe at this point that George Orwell's prophecy in 1984 has proven false. When severely oppressed populations take up arms against their brutal oppressors, who for a while perfected the techniques of censorship and collective punishment, it means humanity hasn't died out yet. The price in blood is awfully substantial, but mankind is not made to wear a leash.

Several key Syrian fascists have been killed today. You can't fight fascism with roses and olive branches.

I've always thought that Huxley had a more accurate vision of the future myself. 1984 is great and all, but it's definitely a product of the Cold War.

I think 1984 holds true but you have to take the geographical context into account. The three main states in 1984 were ones that had had successful democracies. Syria is definitely not a candidate for an Orwellian dystopia. Unfortunately they are doing a great job of forging their own definition of a social hell hole.

Actually George Orwell is right about 1984 except for about 1 variable missing. Outside interference . If Gadafi or Assad had no people of the outside interfering , they would have won easily.

he just can bomb the hell out of them with chemicals and slaughter as many as they want, no UN, no USA, no Europe, Nothing. He is free to dow whatever he want, but that is not the case. For about every extra bullet he uses, the chances that outside forces getting involved increases.

He didnt mention brainwashing though (although censorship is obivously a major part of it). Maybe majority of North Koreans are satisfied with their situation, or believe that by over throwing their government, their living conditions would become worse (Soviet Union -> Russia?). Maybe they think that the outside world is so treacherous and full of danger that what ever life they're living right now, beats opening the flood gates? Dunno :)
