I woke up today determined to beat Ellert and I did, and now I feel like I am nipping at mjm's heels nicely too :)

Not sure if I have a ton of runs in me tomorrow or not, but I'm coming for that top spot soon! :)

Stage 3 is still taking the lion's share of my bombs and lives, but I am improving. Stage 5 is awesome for scoring :)

you guys are all kicking ass. This thread is awesome. I'm improving, but not cracking 500M yet, so I haven't been uploading scores as it doesn't change my leaderboard position. But I'm (slowly) working on it.

Had a few 1.6 and 1.7 billion runs today in limited play. I can now get past stage 3 boss with minimal damage (2-3 hits at most), but I tend to get cocky on Stage 4 and then royally punished as a result and limp into Stage 5 with less than a fighting chance. This game doesn't hesitate to remind you who's boss.

This is quickly becoming perhaps my favorite Cave game - but I really need to go back to DOJ (my current fave) to compare once again.

EDIT: Forgot about Ibara  DOJ is #2 for me currently...

Hey, improvement! Have you managed to hold a chain through the whole first level yet? Check out the advice I gave mjm a few posts back for pointers on how to do that - continually practicing the first stage to keep the chain is really good practice for figuring out the scoring and doing it reasonably well on later levels...

I literally dreamed about this game last night - in my head, I had everything mapped perfectly.

It didn't quite play out like that, but I finally strung the first 2 levels together in the same run, entered stage 3 with 1.3bil.

Sadly, I had about my worst stage 3 ever, lost 2 lives and only added 250 mil to my score. Ugly.

Got through stage 4 fully intact and had a real shot at the ALL...again...but didn't happen. That stage 5 is just long and mean, got to the last ship before the boss, and lost my last hit :/ I feel like an ALL is just a matter of an actual "game day" away. I wish I could pour 4-5 hours straight into this.

Anyways, new high, tried "B" ship this time:

I, too, have been having dreams about this game

1.3 over the first two stages is quite nice - I have picked up about 1.1 at best on the first two (at best maybe 500mill on level 1, 600million on level 2). I assume you are picking up the 800million+ or so on level 2?

On that run, yeah 519 on stage 1, 780-ish on stage 2.

If I don't hit at least 250 stage 1, I restart now. I'm usually in the 350-400 range, that 500+ was an anomaly, strung the entire stage, through the boss AND got 6 of the bees.

Have you noticed that your very first chain dies out randomly, like in the first 5 seconds of the game? I figured there must be just a small gap where i'm not killing anything, so now I wait about 3 seconds before shooting at the start of that stage, and that slight delay is enough to keep that initial chain at the very start maintained all the way through. Granted, it's only worth about an extra 15 on your chain, but, it's a small help and why not.

I've also improved on not losing chains at midbosses anymore by stringing them along a few extra seconds.

Stage 3 is all about where you activate your hyper. There are areas where you can get a chain from 0 to 1,000 in a matter of seconds. I'm getting better at holding off activating it too. That is tough mentally, because on one hand, your delaying "rebuilding" it, so why not activate, but then you get to a spot where there are hundreds of bullets you could cancel and you don't have the hyper available.

IF (big IF) I could max all my best stages, i'd be in the 3.3-3.4 bil range, so I def. feel like that's possible. And that still accounts for tons of room of improvement.

I REALLY want a full day to dedicate to this game.

EDIT: this is a game that shows why I fucking love shmups. I'm by no means "good" at them (if you look at actual leaderboards on XBLA or Shmups forum, etc). But when you find one that clicks, it offers hours and hours of obsessive gameplay. At first all my progress was in 3 levels. Then 4. Now 5. And it's never tiring. When a shmup has a good scoring system and it clicks with you, it's like what Mike talked about. You dream about it. You think about your strategy while driving. While drifting off to sleep. You are convinced you can improve a tiny bit. It's just crazy to me. When I was younger (when all of us were younger) our parents bought us one new game every few months right? And it kept us busy for months. That got lost when we grew up. We had disposable income. We could buy a new game, play for an hour and shelf it. But nowadays I feel like that young kid again. I get amazed with one game again. It keeps me busy (maybe not for months, but weeks anyway, which is still a great feeling). I look at so many games sitting on my shelf I've owned for years because I felt I should own them... but I doubt they'd offer me this kind of satisfaction.

^ Amen to that. Shmups are the only genre that can pull me in to the point of feeling like a kid again. Probably the reason I stopped "collecting"
