La Mulana has been kind of a classic freeware game from Japan for a long time. It's a fun little metroidvania game, heavy on the vania. The original was designed to look like a game for the MSX. It recently just got re-released with better graphics (though now it costs money).
If you've played the original, you know the sequel to I Wanna Be The Guy is going to be brutally difficult. This is a game where not even the level select map screen is safe. Everything is counter intuitive and designed to kill you. It's so hard it's funny though, so give it a shot and see if you can even pass level 1.
It's a remake of the 1995 game XKobo which was available on Linux and Mac (maybe other systems but I'm not sure). Basically a clone of Namco's often forgotten 1981 arcade classic Bosconian, you pilot your space ship in all eight directions with the objective of destroying enemy star bases either one piece at a time or all in one shot if you can hit the core.
It has fifty levels and select-able difficulties. The game starts off slow but grows incredibly intense later on with bullets, enemies and asteroids flying everywhere. The creator is apparently at work on the sequel which is looking pretty neat as well.
Pick this one up if you like old-style arcade games and especially if you enjoy Bosconian or want to try an addictive free-roaming shoot'em up.
OK... this game just about gave me a heart attack. This is some rather scary stuff based on the internet spawned myth of the slender man, a dark figure in a black suit with long skinny arms and legs and no distinguishable facial features. If you look at the slender man for too long you will die. He seems to have the ability to appear behind you as if from out of nowhere.
The premise of the game is simple. You have to find 8 notes that have been scattered throughout the woods to unravel the mystery of the slender man. You are alone. You are slow. You are weak. You only have a flashlight that you can't hold up straight while running. You will get lost and the slender man will most likely find you and kill you before you find all the notes. Good luck.
This is a first person grappling hook game with lots of platforming and puzzles. It has some nice graphics that use the Unreal engine to nice effect. This game reminds me of some mix of Quantum Conundrum and Bionic Commando. The jumping is rather floaty, which makes it less frustrating than most first person platforming, but also makes the whole thing feel like it doesn't have a lot of punch and gravity to it. Still, a nice game, and if you're looking for something both cool and nonviolent, this is a good example of that.
Warsow is a fast-paced twitch shooter where you bounce around like bunny rabbits on meth that are armed with crazy weapons. It's sort of like if Unreal Tournament, Borderlands, and that rabbit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail all had some crazy mutant FPS baby.
Before Rare Ltd. was making classic games like Battletoads, Donkey Kong Country, Cobra Triangle, and RC Pro Am, they were a smaller company called Ultimate Play The Game. One of the classic games that they made for the ZX Spectrum was ATIC ATAC. This game has now been remade to play on your modern PC. Enjoy.
