Horrible Sega style service

Post by Toonami2112x »

I just purchased a modded Sega Saturn from Sega style. I have heard people on here talk about doing the same and it seems most people are satisfied.
Within 20 minutes of receiving mine it started to fail to read the games. It will not recognise them most of the time. Even music CDs do not play properly, instead they are extremely fuzzy and hardly discernable.
After contacting Sega style it is obvious they are indifferent to it. They said it may have happened in shipping but offered no advice or concern. I expect some hardware failure from older consoles but that's horrible service to ignore me.

Any clue what could be causing the laser to act so weird? It will work well for an hour or so, then if it fails reading once it always gets on a streak where it won't read for a long time.

I have tried a cleaner cd that has little bristle type things to clean on it but it hasn't helped much if any, what kind of cleaner would you reccomend?

Man that's really unfortunate, sorry to hear that.

If you already tried one of those cleaners, there's not much you can do as far as the lazer is concerned. But you might want to check and see if they actually modded it right. By that I mean check for loose connections from the mod chip, and read a guide or two that Sega Style has on their site for installing the chip. Basically make sure they did everything right. It's possible that it could have been rushed or simply knocked loose during shipping. Those modchips are very thin/flimsy. Make sure the Mod chip is connected snugly.

Yeah I'll read up on it, I've fixed my dreamcast before but don't know much about saturns. When I received the system it had a disc in the drive, maybe in shipping the disc scrapped the laser.

Sometimes it may be necessary, in my experience, to get a lens cloth that's been slightly wetted with Windex or some sort of lens cleaner and lightly rub the CD lens.

I've never heard of Sega Style before, but if they do some sort of work on your system, that should come with some sort of limited warranty that's longer than 20 minutes.

I'll give that a try too, I bought it modded from Sega style. I had seen a few posts here mentioning him. Im not entirely surprised to have an old system malfunction but consider it has been like that from day one and likely is so because of improper installation or the cd being in it when shipped im dissappointed with their attitude towards it. They even stopped responding to me.

hi Toonami , unfortunate luck man

what kind of cleaner would you reccomend?

I would recommend ' Isopropyl Alcohol ' to clean the Lens , check this Youtube Video on how to clean a Lens

Make sure the Q-Tip isnt dripping with Alcohol aswell

WrathOskvro makes some great points , also you may want to reflow the solder where necessary like the Signal Wire and Power. If you get down to the still not working stage after everythings been exhausted , grab a new Modchip from Rob Webb at Consolegoods.co.uk. He's treated me very well and every Saturn Modchip i got works like a charm.

Luckily, I didn't have any issues with Sega Style, but a buddy of mine did. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone if they can find an alternate means of getting a modchip.

A dirty lens isn't going to make CDs sound fuzzy. That only applies to analog stuff like tapes and records. If it were having trouble reading the disc the sound would break up like it was skipping or not play at all.
