Creating your own ps2 HD Remake

Post by d123456 »

Today I was able to play a 480i 4:3 game in 480p 16:9 on my actual PS2, no emulation.
Thanks to No.47 http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-PCSX2-Wi ... #pid246725
I was already able to play The King of Route 66 in 4:3 480p with GSM. But now I have patched the iso for 16:9

It looks amazing. I really think that somehow almost all 4:3 3D games can be made to display in 16:9, even arcade games.
Some other games I forced into 16:9
Sega Sports Tennis (Virtua Tennis 2)
Battle Gear 3
Ridge Racer V
Crazy Taxi
There´s also a 16:9 pnach for Enthusia!
Not to dis official HD remakes, but if we can force the games to 480p and 16:9 we need not wait for hd remakes, we can do it ourselves.
I made this thread, because today is the first time I went from 480i 4:3 to 480p 16:9 on my PS2.

Normal 480i 4:3

hex edited and GSM 480p 16:9

Note how there is more to see on the left and right. The 2D text elements become stretched, but the 3D game engine is in true 16:9, not stretched

Most hd games internally render the image at a lower (lower than 720p) resolution. It gets upscaled to 720p or 1080p, but that is totally beside the point.
The ps2 can upscale to up to 1080p too.
I can play KOR66 in 720p and even in 1080p on a real PS2. But 480p just looks slightly better.
So 1080p 16:9 then. Is that HD enough for ya?

Picky Picky. I consider 480p HD, its definitely not SD. Who cares if its not the current HD standard, still an improvement that looks sweet. 480p requires a Component or HDMI/DVI hookup.

@ d123456 - Great info! Nice to see all the care and offering an improvement of PS2 games for widescreen owners.

Apparently it's considered enhanced definition (ED). Same resolution as SD but progressive scan.

Certainly far from HD. VERY FAR.

I am not sure how this is really an improvement for widescreen owners, but it is a nice option.

sd tv´s cannot do 480p. They go up to 480i. Only hdtv´s can do 480p.
OK, ED, whatever, like I said the ps2 can play these games @ 720p, 1080i and 1080p as well. You are not sure how this really is an improvement for widescreen owners?

I'd rather play the game in the aspect ratio the game was designed for. What is hard to understand about that?

So when playing for instance Ferrari F355 on the ps2, you select 4:3 instead of the built in 16:9 mode? You hate HD remakes? Do you play Daytona USA on the PS3 or 360 in 4:3, because these original games were 4:3? Off course if you don´t have a widescreen tv, I could relate. You just see more on the left and right. Look, I added crappy pictures in the first post. And no these pics are not from my phone, they are from an actual Digital 8.3 Megapixel Camera

I often use custom resolution mods with old PC games, and since I have a widescreen tv I'm glad when a game has 16:9 mode. This is a lot of effort to go through, but if you must have widescreen, then...congratulations
