New to Dreamcast, advice?

So I'm planning on getting a Dreamcast in the near future and I'm doing some research. Is there anything I should know about it before I go in? I want to get most of the big name games and was wondering about any other personal recommendations. I know the RPG market for it was small, but what is there besides Grandia 2 and Skys of Arcadia? Also, would my best bet for games be ebay lots or what? I don't want to pay a ton since I'll be in school next year, however. I should be to pick up some loose ones because I will be in Indianapolis and I know of at least 1 or 2 great stores there. Thanks! (first post in years, weird haha)

there are so many ways to enjoy your dreamcast!

Official and pirated.

You can enjoy the thrill of the hunt finding the games original and complete

or you can enjoy the simple act of burning a disc.

Of course theres lots of homebrew games for it too.

You could just burn a bootdisc and play official imported games too.

As for RPGS you can find other ones too.

Yes. Avoid paying no more than $30 for a console in good condition. If you can get the hardware in a lot with some good software the better so long as the price reasonable. If you can somehow purchase a unit from a BnM store, then go that route to ensure some sort of reasonable store warranty if anything goes wrong.
There are 3 hardware model variations, rev. 0,1 or 2. The latter revision being the final models that were produced before SEGA withdrew the console from the market. Rev 2's reliability are... Dubious at best. Always be on the lookout for a rev 0 or the more common rev 1 model.

I am picking one up soon for $30 with one controller a vmu, sonic adventure, and JGR. I had a dreamcast about 2 years ago but it broke so I have some random games and controllers lying around. The games are very cheap! Some brand new ones are less than $10 each on amazon! I think it's a good pick up

What happened to your previous DC? Do you still have it? what gave out?

A nice chunk of its game library is still quite affordable and many titles can still be found brand new via Amazon or even ebay for a reasonable price. But the more obscure titles can get a tad pricey like Project Justice, Power Stone 2, Shenmue 2, Cosmic Smash, Zero Gunner 2 etc.

The dreamcast is a great system. Crazi taxi, virtua tennis, mvc 1 and 2, capcom vs snk, soul calibur, sonic, hell even the 2k sports series are still fun to play. I love my dreamcast. I play all the time on weekends. I can't wait to play street fighter double impact on friday night.
You should get extra controllers and memory units and rumble paks. This way here when your friends come over They are going to waant to play with that system. The graphics hold up very well and there are soo many arcade ports on that thing.

Well I was having trouble running backups so I tried to adjust the laser and then it just didn't want to work.

I am planning on picking up Space Channel 5, Chu Chu Rocket, Sega Rally 2, Virtua Tennis/tennis 2k2, some of the 2k sports games, and maybe some of the other cheap new games from amazon. (I want to make one big order to save on shipping) Eventually I plan on getting the big 2 RPGs, RE Code Veronica, Shenmue, Soul Calibur, Blue Splinter etc. Are there any games that aren't featured in the articles that anyone would recommend? I am especially looking for some cheap shmups, too, seeing as most of them are at least $20. Thanks!

I think you mean Blue Stinger. There aren't to many affordable shmups to be honest, Gigawing comes to mind and Armada if that counts. Some very affordable DC games that come to mind that are worth checking out.. Hydro Thunder, Wetrix, Dead or Alive 2, Alone in The Dark, Expendable, Spider Man, Daytona USA, Soul Calibur etc.

Hang on to it as it could be used for parts in the future. You still have working Motherboard, Controller Board andvarious othe components that'll be useful!

There are a few 2D fighters out there that can be had for $20 and below like KoF 99DM, KoF Evo, SFA 3 CvS1 and 2. Another decent alternative to save a bit on those 2D fighters is purchasing the import Versions of fighting games (they are usually cheaper than their US counterparts) and using a boot disk to play them on your console.
