Thought the game was kinda fun with the few times I did play it. I bought it used for 15 bucks including shipping so it was no biggy. Just wanted to collect shmups as I am a big fan.shallowgamer wrote:I can tell you what to avoid, "XII Stag". It was cheap, and it was Taito, so I picked it up. It's based on combo scoring, which I've always been abysmal at.
As for other collection, you should check out shmups.com for a complete list. I really like 1945 I +II and Dragon Blaze.

I see this topic's been dead for several months, but I just happened to come across it today and wanted to set the record straight. There's nothing wrong with XII Stag. It's a competent title from Taito with a creative scoring system and some excellent visuals.
You sucking at comboing has nothing to do with whether or not people should avoid a given game.
Also, it doesn't look like anyone's mentioned Homura, which is another great one from Taito where you're a ninja who shoots obscene amounts of shuriken and can also do a teleport attack with a sword or slice bullets so they fling back at enemies. I think they're both Japan only, but I got 'em here for 480 and 980 yen, respectively.

My game-related blog.

I'm quite happy with the Xbox version of Psyvariar 2 myself. I don't notice any significant difference between the DC and Xbox versions, save for the additional modes available in the Xbox rendition. Then again, I get my ass handed to me on a regular basis with that game, so I could be missing some things.ZenLogikos wrote:I don't consider your statement jerky in the least! When I typed that I was actually just referring to what I remembered to be the multiple versions of Psyvariar 2 on the PS2 alone. I refreshed my memory and I was in fact thinking of the multiple versions of Psyvariar 1(Medium Unit, Revision, Complete). I wouldn't call the PS2 version 'hands-down' the best, but I would still stick with it despite the good points you made, as I don't have a VGA cable!

Thanks for "setting the record straight". Looks like we've got a Taito Rep joining the forumfingersmaloy wrote:I see this topic's been dead for several months, but I just happened to come across it today and wanted to set the record straight. And combo scoring isn't the only reason I didn't like it. I found it a bit dull.
But I will agree with you about Homura. I always give shooters brownie points for not using space ships. And I was very happy that it didn't play like Sol Divide....oops, probably just pissed someone else off!

I always like to mention The Red Star since it's 1/2 shooter.

Re: Expanding my PS2 shooter collection
I'm sure alot of shmup fans reserve a place in their heart for run 'n guns. You've gotta appreciate the balance between close combat vs. guns in Red Star. It forces the player to use both.Gamerforlife wrote:I always like to mention The Red Star since it's 1/2 shooter.
