OUYA: Open Source Console - Kickstarted in 1 Day

Post by SpaceBooger »

OUYA is a new game console for the TV, powered by Android.

We've packed this little box full of power. Developers will have access to OUYA's open design so they can produce their games for the living room, taking advantage of everything the TV has to offer.

Hackers welcome.

Have at it: It's easy to root (and rooting won't void your warranty). Everything opens with standard screws. Hardware hackers can create their own peripherals, and connect via USB or Bluetooth. You want our hardware design? Let us know. We might just give it to you. Surprise us!

Specifications:

Tegra3 quad-core processor
1GB RAM
8GB of internal flash storage
HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth LE 4.0
USB 2.0 (one)
Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
Android 4.0

Best of all, OUYA's world-class controller, console, and interface come in one beautiful, inexpensive package. All the games on it will be free, at least to try.

At first I was skeptical, but after thinking about this a both a source of great indy games and an awsome emulator box, I understand how it got funded in a day.
I wish I had the cash to risk on this project.

I've considered donating a little but I'm not willing to risk the price of the system or more.

What the heck. I backed it too. The kind of sad thing is that by the time this console is released the Tegra 4 will be out, and the Tegra 3 will be retired. Oh well. $99. Why not?

You know there's already an open platform people can make games for. It's called a PC.

Indeed. Windows is excellent for indie/doijin games. But I really do hope that this project is a success.

I signed up for $129 (since I assume that gets me a second controller).

As bobcats are wont to say, what could possibly go wrong?

Worst case it's a little Android box with matching gamepads to run emulators. Which I already have an HTPC for, but still

Meh, no hate towards it, but just not for me... it is easy just to hook up a pc to a tv and that's what I do... decent price point for what you get though.

it is an interesting idea though. Here's a cheap Android PC that you don't have to know how to configure or anything. So non-geeks can totally nab it and hook it up easily. Of course the true test will be game quality. If it's just Angry Birds etc then meh.
