Ibara, DDP, Espgaluda. But let me elaborate something here Dave, I'm not saying that I consider Deathsmiles "the best" shmup. I'm saying my own personal favorite -- at least at this moment in time. In fact, I'd pretty easily say just Cave alone that Espgaluda and Ibara are in fact better games. I mean, I generally prefer vertical shmups to horizontals anyway. But... since the day I opened DS, I've played it probably every single day since. It's the one game that when I have 15 mins to kill the first thing I think to do is load up Deathsmiles and see if I can improve any little section. Even if I think other shmups are "better."

Ok, I get that I think - I just didn't find it compelling enough to play it much beyond the timeframe when I first got it in. Your exuberance for it has made me consider plugging it in again, though, so maybe it will move up my list. I think that fact that it's a hori makes it a low priority for me typically (my current go-to is DDP Resurrection).

Cheapest game on the list is Guwange which got a XBLA release. WELL WORTH IT. I think goes for $10?

It's a shame that DaiOuJou is region locked. That would be my suggestion for #1 Cave game to check out.
My B/S/T thread! :)

It does indeed go for $10. It's been on my list "to get" for a while now.

OK so I downloaded the replay of the player with the highest score on 360 version... shit is just unreal. I mean equally mindblowingly inspiring and depressing. It's like they're playing a completely different game as me. I know I've talked about DS a lot lately, but talked about it even more with Mike and Chaz via PM discussing strategy and all. But OMG... at times there's literally more skulls on screen than bullets. Just unbelievable. The secret seems to be knowing how/when to utilize that mode (what is it? Power Up Mode?) where you hit A+B and yr chain depletes but yr shots are stronger and every skull is worth more. You guys need to watch that replay... it's just tough to wrap yr brain around.

Had a really really meh run going - I almost always go to the bonus stage after the first 6 stages for the extra points, but since I was only at 12mil, figured i'd go for the ALL.

Ended up getting a chain to start the level and was at 19mil so just wanted to hit the extend to have a good shot at the all - got the extend, got another chain running and died out on the boss. Ended up being my highest score yet - which gives me tons of optimism, because until stage 7, it was a horrible run.

awesome Mike! Now that we have the score thing figured out, I'm looking forward to giving it another serious go at upping my score. Had a couple inebriated runs last night where I was hitting like 5M by the 2nd level but dying stupidly. Hopefully I can find some time over the weekend to get back at it.

EDIT: had some time to kill before getting ready for dinner plans.

yup, the reason why I got 4 new shmups this weekend, and can't be bothered to pop them in. :) Man, Deathsmiles is just so awesome. And it feels great to finally be getting some respectable scores right now.
