GC Component Cable Upgrade

Post by Spyke »

Hi all,

Long story short... had GC for a while with Rogue Leader and Ikaruga. Was using the standard composite cables. Picture was a bit below par. Text was blurry, detail hard to make out. Got a used Component cable today and connected it all up...

WOW! Ikaruga is stunning and the game I really got it for, Resident Evil 4, looks much better than before. Haven't tried RL yet but I expect it to be clearer and sharper too.

Difference was so good that my Ikaruga score has increased!

I'm sure people on here have said it already, but if you can find one and can afford the asking price, it's a great improvement on picture quality (with 19" HD LCD TV)

I still dont understand why there is not some chinese company making knock-offs of the GameCube component cable, i mean shit, i just bought a knock-off Original Xbox component cable for $8 brand new.

Not going to spend $90+ on a component cable that doesnt even include the right and left audio!

There was a proprietary chip in the gamecube component cable, that's why there are no cheap knock-offs. I sold mine, but I find s-video to be just fine on a CRT, almost as good as component on the right TV.

I run Gamecube Component on my HD CRT, a definite major improvement over SVideo. A costly but to me worth it upgrade. First one cost I think around 30-40 bucks. I picked up a spare at a very lucky chance find at Gamestop for five dollars.

@ Spyke - Congrats! Oh you gotta face the fire, how much and where did you get it?

I agree! I gave up on it and just play GC game on my Wii and got a Monoprice component cable. The cable is really great and the picture looks great too. I know some have pointed it out it isn't as sharp as the GC but I'll sacrifice it for $80 less!

Basically... The original state of Gamecube's output is not component. Nintendo included digital AV then never sold that cable, or AFAIK told third parties how to make one. Though a circuit to turn the sound into SPDIF was later invented.

It is also possible to craft an VGA cable by modding the Component cable.
VGA will look even better than Component, but component is a huge improvement over the other cables.

VGA will only work with the games that support progressive scan, which is not many. It would look awesome, but IMO it's not worth sacrificing a component cable to do it.

The GC component cable is the only GC cable to support 480p if I'm not mistaken.

So games that support 480p should be the ones where you see improvement...

~200 480p games out of ~450 released games? (kind of quick counted)
So like almost half of them support 480p. Surprising, I thought it was way more than that.
It should be possible to make the cable do both Component and VGA, perhaps even with a switch.
