Strategy & Mecha Games

Post by Forlorn Drifter »

Looking for some strategy games. I'm good anywhere from RTS to SRPG, though on the SRPG side I want to avoid being too grindy or complicated. From what I've played of Ogre Battle, I'd rather gameplay be some kind of grid system than waiting on the character to slowly walk to the location with little action. I'm also in need of some clarificaton when it comes to Command and Conquer 3, because it looks like theres about 4 games named that.

On the mecha games, I'm just looking for one or two, something for me to play on occasion. I know there's Armored Core 4, which I don't know anything about. All else is welcome here.

Thank ya'll in advance.

I personally liked Front Mission Evolved (3rd Person shooter) on 360/PS3 and its like $10 bucks. The bosses are hard as shit so be warned. and there's in and out of mech action which is good.
Then there's the original Front Mission games which are SRPG, Xenogears RPG, Vanguard Bandits SRPG.
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

I mainly meant on the console side of things, but I'll give it a look.

Anybody played Record of Agarest War? I was always told it was an RPG, but apparently its an SRPG. Is it any good? Suckish? So Japanese it hurts?

It's shit (yes I've played it).

There are so many quality SRPGs out there, if you're new to this genre don't even bother man. For SRPGs, some personal suggestions that are amazing: Shining Force series (doesn't get much better than this unless for a non-grinding/stat managing guy), Final Fantasy Tactics, Langrisser series, Vandal Hearts I & II, post GC and Wii Fire Emblem games, Advance Wars, and Disgaea games.

For mecha, well I could write paragraphs. However I am going to assume there's a language barrier for you with japanese text. Which cancels out like... everything. Having said that,

Heavy Arms games for PC are amazing, upcoming Mechwarrior game looks great (old entries are fun if you're okay with how dated they are), Super Robot Taisen OG games for GBA (also SRPGs), Front Missions games (again, SRPGs), tons of Gundam games... sadly most mecha games are JPN-only though so it's hard to give suggestions. There is a game coming out called Hawken that is more or less a mecha FPS, looks great.

As for Armored Core, Armored Core V is the best AC game ever, although it's a bit overwhelming. If you want mecha action at it's finest check it out though. I mean IV is great, but V is another level. Personally I enjoy more or less every AC release ever, maybe check out II: Another Age or III if you're willing to dip into some more basic PS2 stuff.

If you have a PC, you can still find the free release of Mechcommander Gold around. Here is a page with a couple links to the download, along with some tips on running it.

While you will need a bit more machine to run it (but still not much by today's standards), Mechwarrior 4 was also released for free here.
