Make a DIY base for your PS2 Slim

I was once again (ie: as always) looking to move some of my gaming stuff around and had this nice cubby in my entertainment center that would be a good place for a console. The problem was it wasn’t very wide but very tall. As my set up is I had two options, move my Wii or get a stand for my slim PS2. My Wii is modded, so it has a USB drive plugged in, and I use it for Gamecube gaming so it needed to stay put and on its side; so I used Google to search for a PS2 stand. The ones that came up first were stupid expensive and/or had lights, didn’t need that, but I finally found just the plain round stand I had seen before. The new ones on Amazon were around $12 after shipping! It also didn’t look all that amazing in quality and the cheaper ones looked even worse. So here is how I went about to make the same round stand with free stuff I had laying around my house.

A good idea, and so easy to do. You brought up a good point about using the plastic cover disc, any flat stock can be used for a custom look. I'm wondering if a metal plate might be better for strength. Thinking something from Home Depot in the plumbing or hardware aisle. The only thing you might want to add is the exact size screw needed, diameter and length. Saves on the guess work.

Yeah a firmer base out of metal or wood would be loads better of course. But that would require going somewhere to buy stuff.

I'm honestly not sure of the screw size, I found it in my tool box. It is about the size of a computer case screw like I mentioned. Kind of like these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-NA-_-NA

The screw you posted looks like a self tapping screw for sheet metal to mount a PC fan. I would think the base support screw would be a stronger Machine Tread Metric. I do not have a PS2 Slim to verify the exact size myself, but it would be good to add this information to make the Guide easier.

Maybe someone with a Slim Stand and Thread Gauge or Tap Set can chime in?

The disc plastic is a great idea for grabbing what is on hand, a few bad burned discs can be stacked to make it more robust with a matched screw length. No need to glue the halves, the screw will keep them in place. Putting the write side up will give a shiny appearance without showing the label.

For less then a buck, a zinc coated metal plate can be used for better strength. Another approach, for a few dollars a Fence Post Metal or Wood Cap?

Those wouldn't be self tapping there is no way to start the "tap"; flat end and wide thread. Mine had closer teeth though. The hole in the PS2 isn't very deep at all. I had another one that was the right length but too skinny. 3/4" - 1/2" in length should do it and the thread diameter is probably right at 1/4". I'm no pro at measuring screws or anything so these are my best guesses. I'll try and track one down with the measuring on the package and screw it in for exacts if I can.

Perhaps you should gotten one of these. They are very affordable and they work amazingly well. They have em in black and white. I love mines

That does not look very stable, how wide is it perpendicular to the PS2? I think its also getting away the point of this Thread, the satisfaction of making a custom inexpensive stand.

@ KDub - Don't get me wrong on my suggestions, the plastic stand you made with the discs is a great idea, especially since it is basically free and the customized look. I was just adding in different methods to kick new ideas into the mix.

@kDub: Yes! They are pretty nice knockoffs of the official Sony 9000x model vertical stand which costs a fortune and are hard to comeby. This stand here will work for both slim PS2 models which prompted me to purchase one last year as I have a 9000x model so the former slim PS2 stands are not compatible with my unit at all.

Stable!? Its a near duplicate of the offical Sony stand that was only available in japan!
I have this! I can tell you first hand this thing is stable!
It's only $5 five dollars w/free shipping!!! I wasn't tryin to take away from the purpose of this thread. It was merely a suggestion which I can stand by as I own one, plus kdub mentioned he was on the prowl for a stand before he turn to making one of his own!

No worries about the other suggestions, they are welcome. I certainly didn't make this as a be all end all tutorial; it didn't take enough time at either end to be that anyway.

I think that base on eBay has the ability to be a good choice. It is just the matter if you want to wait for the shipping from China and if you want to risk it being well made. While I have no doubts a lot of them are perfectly fine (having bought many knock off stuff for my cell phones and systems before) there is always that chance that the one you get is a dud. They are knock offs after all! But I would rather spend $5 on that and risk it then $12 for the garbage one on Amazon.
