David Simon (who came up with the show concept) was a police reporter in Baltimore which is how we was able to make the show have a lot of accuracy. The show revolved around the concept of "The Wire" each season. I also liked how each season he focused on a particular theme. The first season was the general drug trade. The second season was about shipping & the dockyards. 3rd season was about politics, 4th season - education, and the last season about journalism.Gamerforlife wrote:Oh...shit, I think it happened. So what have you guys been watching lately?

Yeah, this is one of the reasons why the show is my all time favorite and why it stayed consistently fresh and appealing throughout its run. It never felt stale, it was never predictable, and I've never seen a city more fully fleshed out in any medium than I did in that show (though Treme is starting to do this, too). I really felt like I knew a lot about Baltimore by the end of the rungtmtnbiker wrote: I also liked how each season he focused on a particular theme.

Murder She Wrote per the wife's request
I find it interesting that Angela Lansbury (Jessica) seems to be in some way related to a guest star in what seems like every episode.

I'm digesting this show slowly, replaying certain scenes just to make sure I'm not missing anything and to try and remember who all these characters are. I'm also reading episode recaps after I watch an episode just to make sure I'm keeping everything straight. There's a lot going on in this show.dsheinem wrote:Yeah, this is one of the reasons why the show is my all time favorite and why it stayed consistently fresh and appealing throughout its run. I like some of the philosophical stuff in season 1, episode 3. That chess scene was pretty awesome. I never quite looked at chess that way. That was just a very cool scene.

Oh, and any show with Lance Reddick in it immediately gains bonus points with me. He's type cast as leadership characters, but he plays them so damn well. I've enjoyed him on Fringe and it's nice to see him on The Wire.

That's how you play chess yo
What about those little bald headed bitches?
"The king, stay the king"
"The queen ain't no bitch. She got all the moves"
"The pawns man, in the game, they get capped quick. They be out the game early."
"Unless they some smart ass pawns."
I fucking love this scene

My parents house (till next month when I move back to college) has no cable and really the only thing I've been watching regularly is America's Got Talent on NBC. A few nights ago they had a musical painter who paints to music along with dancers around. They were painting to "Paint it Black", the end result was like WOW!!!

Lance Reddick is good but one of my favorites is Michael K Williams who played Omar Little on The Wire. He's also in Boardwalk Empire.Gamerforlife wrote:Oh, and any show with Lance Reddick in it immediately gains bonus points with me.

Mmm. Syfy has a Twilight Zone marathon on tonight. I had to stop after a few episodes because I'm too wasted to pay attention.
I'm trying to decide whether to re-watch Breaking Bad or The Wire. Breaking Bad is starting up again, but I've already watched Seasons 1-3 twice. The Wire will always be waiting for me, but Gamerforlife is making me antsy to watch it again (especially for Brother Mouzone.) Any votes?

Re: So what have you guys been watching lately?
It took a few episodes, but I finally feel "comfortable" with The Wire, which is to say that I'm feeling like I know who everyone is now and I understand the lingo. So now it's becoming easier and more enjoyable to watch, and I really enjoy how they punctuate the drama. A certain character just died, and though he was a bit player, they really drive home how horrific and tragic it was. I feel like The Wire is a show that throws you into the deep end with its first episode, but once you get familiar with everything it becomes as easy to follow as anything else.
I don't have a favorite character yet, but the show has done a good job in getting me invested in characters on both sides of this little drug war. Without spoiling anything, I'd say D'Angelo is probably the most interesting character for me right now and Lester Freaman seems like the coolest guy on Mcnulty's squad. There's just something damn cool about that guy
