Which Model of the Genesis is the best?

Post by Konacha »

So I'm wanting to start rebuilding my Sega Genesis collection again and the first step to do that is buy the system itself. I originally had to throw away my older system 10 years ago , which was a Model 1, due to video problems with it (and the fact that I had sold most if not all my Genesis games) so I am wanting to re-build my collection. In short I am wanting to know out of the two systems, the Model 1 and Model 2, which one produced the best video and sound? Or if it doesn't matter. I'm also thinking about buying a Sega CD and 32X (which I also had) which is why I didn't include the Model 3 which you couldn't hook up the two with it.

You cant go wrong with any of them.

But you should keep an eye out for a CDX. That way you can play Sega Cd games and save the space.

I never liked the hugeness that is the beast. SEGACD/GENESIS/32X. Too bulky and too many plugs to use.

The orginal console can take the master system adapter which the 2nd version cant. Suposedly its got better audio when hooked up to the Sega CD.

the Downside is that its kinda hard to get the composite cable. Its just white and yellow cords.

The 2nd version is much more pleasing to look at. A little smaller but still looks good. This guy takes a whole different A/V cable than the orginal genesis. These may also be hard to find, but the internet can find it for you. Its yellow tipped plug can be used with the game gear.

The second version fits nicer on the Sega cd. Unless you find the extension piece if you have the original genesis.

Definitely use Hobie's link, but there are a few more things you need to think about first, then you would consult the guide. First of all, what all will you be using the Genesis for? What qualities do you want from one? What version did you used to own?

Think about those questions and answer them and share. Once you figure out exactly which of the three (in your case two) models you would like, then consult Hobie's guide for which version.

A warning though, you may want to find your genesis in the wild/with someone you trust. Ebay sellers probably don't have the time/want to give the time to tell you which version of the model of Genesis they are selling, and are probably gonna try to rip you off in price, where as in the wild you can find great deals, and can probably figure out the version by holding the system in your hands. For instance my first retro buy was 2 Genesis' 14 CIB games, all the cords needed for one Genny, and two controllers for (if I remember) 30 bucks.

If you are a total audiophile, then you will probably want to get the High Definition Graphics 1st model (correct me if I'm wrong, somebody). After that, Sega skimped on the audio hardware and it doesn't sound quite as nice. If I listen to sound samples from each, I can definitely hear the difference. But if it's just some console hooked up to a TV, I can't really distinguish. To people like my friend, it makes a world of difference. To each his own. I actually gave him my High Definition Graphics model in favor of a model 2 that fits nicely with my Sega CD module and has stereo AV out. That's the downside to the 1st gen Genesis, because the only way to get stereo output is by getting a headphone jack to RCA splitter jack.

If importing is your thing, then maybe pick up a Genesis 3. I have a Gen3 just for playing imports (of which I own a whopping one title, although I hope to have another one off of YAJ in a few more days).

you can always solder in some RCA's for stereo audio on the model 1's, and may as well grab s-video while you're in there. The simple s-video mod is the same as on the neo geo, one capacitor, a couple resistors, and a transistor.

I have a dream.

I have a dream, and that dream is: one day I will walk into a Goodwill or Pawn Shop and see a CDX sitting next to other "portable cd players" and buy it for cheap. But for now, it's only a dream. :D

I thought Sega released a Master System Adapter 2 for use with the second model? Or was that just here in Europe (or even unreleased)?

I like the first two models a lot, definitely have a soft spot for the first model.

As others said if you can somehow get a CDX, definitely go for it.
