dreamcast graphics
Personally I think polygon wise the dreamcast was about on the same level as the ps2, but style wise the DC won overall. You'll never find game with as much graphical style like on the dreamcast. Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, Rez, just to name a few. GTA 3 wins with polygon count, but to me the game looks drab and boring, all the enviroments seem the same.
I will create a monument to non-existence.
^ I'm inclined to that label your opinion a matter of personal taste. The PS2 minus the mipmapping can do most of what the Dreamcast could, and more! Even cel shading works pretty well for the PS2 (Okami), and Aerodancing could never touch Ace Combat. I also don't believe a game of the scale of Shadow of the Colossus is possible on the Dreamcast without major compromises. Whilst the PS2 capabilities were overstated and overhyped back in the day, it's technically superior to the Dreamcast. MGS2 alone was a nightmare to port to the PC and Xbox back in 2001. Gran Turismo's highly detailed car models weren't possible on the Dreamcast either.
I'm sorry but your opinion can also be labeled as subjective. How do you know that the Dreamcast could not do that? Unless you are a developer and have developed DC games for 5-10 years how can you possibly say what the limits of the system was?Pulsar_t wrote:^ I'm inclined to that label your opinion a matter of personal taste. I'm not having a dig but we are all stating personal opinion on this matter. Until a Dreamcast dev pipes into the discussion, it's all hearsay anyway.
They said that transparency was impossible on the Saturn... So who's to say that anything was impossible on the DC.

Searching for pure technical terms regarding the Dreamcast versus PS2 debate of yesteryear yields quite a few results, one of which is a 7 page spectactle on the NeoGAF forums. Check it out! I believe I knew Dreamcaster back from the day, sadly he wasn't involved in this particular discussion.

I really think we've made this topic too complicated. Bottom line, the Dreamcast was a last gen system like the Xbox, the PS2 and the Gamecube and it has quite a few great games that are just as visually impressive as any of those systems.Pulsar_t wrote:Searching for pure technical terms regarding the Dreamcast versus PS2 debate of yesteryear yields quite a few results, one of which is a 7 page spectactle on the NeoGAF forums. LLLLLLLMMMMMMAAAAAAOOOOO, dude posts a wiki link as a source. Many would understand what I meant and agree that DC was from a gen of its own - the late arcade, Naomie, DC era. Thats an opinion just like anything in wiki.GSZX1337 wrote:No it's not. The Dreamcast was the beginning of the Sixth generation of game consoles. Relax. He was just kidding. You don't have to be a prick about it."Uhh. Just buy one, they're like $20 or so, probably less, and most people here will shun you if you don't have at least one."
Those people are absolutely ridiculous... they can get the fuck outta here with that nonsense.
Shenmue's graphics are a notch above that.kingmohd84 wrote:I just played GTA3 on xbox, would you say the graphics are similar?
Im kidding too... what are you?... besides trying to make a friend?
No, Shenmues graphics are NOT a notch above GTA3 on xbox. Just because you prefer a style, doesnt make it technically superior. LLLOOOLLLL though.
This is very interesting...
Since DC is now considered is an old system and probably around the only good console that never was, you think some people in the future might release games for it?
I heard they still make airplane shooters lke back in the arcade days but, maybe its about time that its hardware is considered old and is easy to design for?
Maybe sega can release like a special edition for the super retro dedicated sega fans version of dc, I heard they did that with genesis lately, maybe that wold interest some mini companies to develope for it.
What sega's got to lose?

On what grounds do you base your argument? You can't simply say, X is better than Y. Do you have any technical details to back this up? In what way are the graphics in GTA 3 on Xbox superior to Shenmue?nateup2 wrote:LLLLLLLMMMMMMAAAAAAOOOOO, dude posts a wiki link as a source. You can say, "I prefer the graphics on GTA 3 because there is more details/the textures are better/the immersion is greater" However all these arguments are subjective and not objective and thats the key. I can counter all those arguments with "the graphics on Shenmue are great because there is better art direction/environments have more immersion/the character models have a lot more detail" However I'm still being subjective here.
However I can be objective in my argument with a bit of research and say "The character models on shenmue are better because they have a higher polygon count" This is an objective opinion and is more useful to the debate rather than saying "I like this 'cuz it is gud".
