Re: Together Retro: Guardian Heroes
I will also be playing the Saturn version later this month, but for those of us who want to play multiplayer and don't have a 360... what about Dungeon Fighter Online?
It's free on Steam and looks like it could be a similar experience.

Re: Together Retro: Guardian Heroes
I kind of don't know what is going on in the game so far. I defeated kanon, who was tough. The attempt at story is funny, it is mostly just beat some soldiers up and then here is a miniboss guy who yells crazy things at me. I am not sure what the different decision paths do yet.
Gameplay is fun, but something I will need to learn the ins and outs of more. So far mostly just button mashing, but it is satisfying.

Re: Together Retro: Guardian Heroes
I generally play as Serena, since she has a good mix of fairly strong physical attacks and fairly strong magic. Ginjirou is fun to play, as his attacks send him flying all over the screen. Han is fun as well. I think the trick is to just keep doing his special attacks. I'll play Randy if I'm feeling adventurous. His magic is powerful, but if he's getting pounded on, it's hard to pull off a spell. Nicole is the hardest to play. The only time I've had moderate success with her is when playing co-op.alienjesus wrote:I've always found Han to be the worst character. Randy's my main choice just because his magic not only gives him great crowd control, but the big spells like the laser, tornado or lightning (which is uber-spammable) pretty much level him up every time you use them. No joke, if you use the laser in the first room of the game, you should get a level up straight away, regardless of whether it actually hit someone or not.Flake wrote:Hans is the man...for the first three or four levels. It seems like no matter which path I take, he just does not cut it once you get towards the end game. Is there any trick I am missing to mitigate his lack of magic?
There are a number of different endings, so the different paths lead to different endings. Try not to focus too much on the story. It makes some sense, but it's best to just let it wash over you rather than trying to figure it all out.Jmustang1968 wrote:I kind of don't know what is going on in the game so far. Each character has a set of Street Fighter-style button combos to pull off special moves and magic. Rather than button mashing, try to learn those.

Well, I do a little better than button mash. I can do the move with Han that launches the enemy in the air and combos a bunch. And I know the different base attacks. I am not sure of the other special moves though.Duane Dibbley wrote:There are a number of different endings, so the different paths lead to different endings. Try not to focus too much on the story. Serena is my second favourite, but I find her ice moves can screw her over sometimes. If you want to use magic attacks effectively you definitely need to learn the quick commands though, selecting it through the menu takes way too long.Duane Dibbley wrote: Each character has a set of Street Fighter-style button combos to pull off special moves and magic. Randy's lightning is his get out of jail card though. His physical special moves are really surprisingly good too, and I've beaten the game as him without using spells at all before. I've maxed speed only as him, maxed magic as him, and maxed attack as him and won with all of them. Max speed is funny too, as he's pretty speedy to begin with. He's practically a blur with max. I never liked Han, his moveset seems limited. Ginjirou I have actually yet to use, for some reason. Nicole has exactly 2 good moves, but is pretty ineffective in single player overall, where her healing move is hard to utilise. The barrier destroys bosses and the laser from heaven is good at clearing space though.

Re: Together Retro: Guardian Heroes
Now that I'm done with Gunstar Heroes I finally gave this one a spin, and I'm really, really liking it. Being a huge Saturn fan, this is a game I always kept hearing about, but for some reason never actually tried it until now, and I'm so glad I finally did.
The graphics are just amazing. I know this is not usually the first thing we talking about in a retro game, but damn, those backgrounds are really stunning. Maybe it's just the nostalgia speaking (love me some 32-bit graphics) but I really think the presentation is something else. And the anime-style characters not only also look good but have great contrast with the background, which from a gameplay perspective is great.
And the gameplay is also awesome. I admit I'm something of a button masher, but the fact that I was still able to beat and enjoy the game shows that it can be as deep as you want it to be. If you want a simple game, you can play it simple, and still be rewarded, if you know what I mean (I sometimes explain things in a weird way xD). There's something about cornering a huge mob and just slashing away that's hugely satisfying, and the level up system just makes things even better.
Only complaint I have is that I can't seem to be able to start a new game with my buffed up character from the last playthrough. I mean, how are we supposed to hit the level cap? Harder difficulty settings? And it would be great if we had, like, some sort of map or hub with all the possible paths, so that we easily knew what levels we already played or have yet to play.
Oh, and about my first playthrough, I played as Han (what can I say, I like to slash things with giant swords) and got the ending where I
I'm now playing with Randy and I'm choosing the opposite, siding with the other guys, and let me tell you, magicians are definitely not my type of character, already wasted more continues than when playing with Han.
BTW, the manual hints at differences between difficulty settings (other than the game getting harder, lol). Does anyone know exactly what these are?

Re: Together Retro: Guardian Heroes
Finally got to try it, and my hack and slashes go to those who CAN hack and slash, I also chose Han. Neat way of incorporating button combinations and RPG-style stats to this game (like Capcom did with 1943 on NES). I know we're not supposed to pay attention to the story, but even the writing is pretty good. Happy to see not much has changed from the Japanese release and I will be continuing on Stage 6 next, that was where my story path has taken me.
