TOTAL: 36
2011 Games Beaten
2010 Games Beaten
My guess is that CvS2EO is the last game I'll beat in the first half of the year (I have plenty of other things to do today), so I'll go ahead and make this my last entry for the first half of the year.
-------------
As I usually do at the midway point and at the end of the year, here's some pointless stats:
Some stats
Total Games: 36 (a sharp decrease from 2010 and 2011, where I was at 50 each year by this point)
System:
Current Gen: 20 (6 - PS3, 5 - 360, 5 - Vita, 3 - iOS, 1 - PC)
Retro: 16 (across 8 systems)
Genre:
Fighting - 11
RPG - 6
Beat 'Em Up/ Run-n-Gun - 6
First Person Shooter - 3
Shmup - 3
Third Person Shooter - 2
Other - 5
Best game I've finished that was released this year: Journey (PS3)
Runner-up: BlazBlu: Continuum Shift Extend (Vita) /Diablo III (PC) (tie)
Best retro game I finished for the first time: Ketsui: Death Label (NDS) (the DS is technically last gen now, right? This port is 6 years old...)
Runner-up: Ys 1 (PSP)

Re: Games Beaten 2012
I was gonna keep counting DS as current gen for now. The consoles are still being produced, still selling well, and have a number of games either recently released or due soon. It's certainly drying up, but I don't think it's quite there yet. There's still some big name Pokémon games on the way. I'm also counting PSP as modern, especially as the Vita wasn't out when I beat the 2 PSP games I beat this year.dsheinem wrote:

Anyway, I might do a little stat round up too whilst I'm at it:
Total: 50
Total beaten so far: 50 - halfway to 100 halfway through the year! Can I reach the triple digits? I reckon not as 5 of my titles were Sam and Max, but who knows?
System Breakdown:
Current Gen : 27
(8 Wii, 6 DS, 5 PC, 3 3DS, 2 Wiiware, 2 PSP, 1 DSiWare)
Retro: 23
(5 Wii Virtual Console, 4 3DS Virtual Console, 3 Master System, 2 Game Boy, 1 Dreamcast, 1 GBA, 1 Gamecube, 1 Game Gear, 1 NGPC, 1 Playstation, 1 Saturn, 1 SNES, 1 XBox)
Physical: 40
Digital: 10
Console: 26
Portable: 19
Computer: 5
By Genre:
Platformer: 12
Adventure (P&C): 6
RPG: 6
Action Adventure: 5
Puzzle: 4
Shooting: 4 (includes shmups, dogfighters, run 'n guns and rail shooters)
Strategy: 4
Fighting: 2
Mini-games: 2
FPS: 1
Racing: 1
Rhythm: 1
Sports: 1
Other: 1 (Trauma Centre)
Best game I've finished released this year: Kid Icarus Uprising. Also the ONLY game beaten released this year...
Top 5 Modern Games beaten this year so far:
1. Kid Icarus Uprising
2. Xenoblade Chronicles
3. Sakura Wars
4. Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse
5. Phoenix Wright: Trials & Tribulations
This was really hard to narrow down, and I'm not even sure I agree with it now either. There's been a lot of great Wii and DS games I've played this year.
Top 5 Retro Games beaten this year so far:
1. Lords of Thunder
2. Golden Axe Warrior
3. Ufouria: The Saga
4. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
5. Command & Conquer
This on the other hand I had very little problem with. There were a few games that narrowly missed the list (Kirby Superstar, F Zero MV), but mostly I haven't been that enamoured with most of my beaten retro games so far this year. Most were good, but not great.

Re: Games Beaten 2012
Out of sheer curiosity, I played the port of Street Fighter 2 for the Master System. I beat it on my first try, on an emulator on a tablet. Yeah, this version of the game is insanely easy; Chun-Li is waaaaaaaayyyy overpowered here.

snatcher - sega cd
keio flying squadron - sega cd
lords of thunder -sega cd
robo aleste - sega cd
android assault - sega cd
task force harrier ex - genesis
thunderforce III - genesis
steel empire - genesis
i think my gaming is maturing a bit. i used to count a shmup conquered if i was able to beat the last boss. and it didn't matter the number of continues used. as long as i beat the game in one sitting it was beat. i just don't get that satisfaction anymore with such lenient standards. i recently upped the ante and currently i will only consider a shmup won if i beat it on default settings and a continue is not used.
so far task force is really the only game i actually had to put some work into to beat it. took me three or so days of playing it on and off to finally conquer it. and when i finally did beat the sumbitch i only died once. i came THIS close to my first ever 1cc. not much to say about it besides, "i liked it."
thunderforce III is okay. another easy shmup. extra lives are given out like pedophilers giving out candy. shit, i died a handful of times and still had 13 lives when i beat it.
steel empire has the most ridiculous slow down. ever.
i need some fresh blood in my genesis collection. anybody have any suggestions on good genesis shmups?

If you're playing through without using any continues, you've already 1cc'ed it. You might be thinking of a no-death run, which is a completely different beast of a challenge. (Depending on what you're playing.)final fight cd wrote:i came THIS close to my first ever 1cc.

Bride of Pin*Bot (from Pinball Arcade) - Vita *new*
TOTAL: 37
2011 Games Beaten
2010 Games Beaten
As I did with Arabian Nights, I am counting this as one "beaten" since I cleared all Standard/Wizard goals and attained the high score. We've been discussing it over here: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 51&t=26326

Re: Games Beaten 2012
Either way, I think you were probably born to play shmups. I've not really heard anyone say the early Thunder Force games were "easy." Though I hear what you mean about the extra lives.final fight cd wrote:really? i always thought 1cc was a no death run. learn something new everyday.
Also, if you're into the Sega side of 16-bit shooters, you'll probably enjoy what the TurboGrafx/PC Engine has to offer.

1/2 Cannon Spike (DC)
1/9 Mega Man X4 (GCN)
1/17 Psycho Soldier (PSN)
1/22 Warhammer 40,000: Dark Crusade (PC)

5/3 Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi 3 (Wii)
6/3 Metroid Prime (Wii)
7/1 Metroid: Other M (Wii)
7/1 Kirby's Return to Dreamland (Wii)
Metroid Other M...it's a good game with some serious issues. I think that if the designers had let go of the idea that the game needed to be made cinematic, it would have turned out perfectly. Still, it's a fun way to spend a few hours.
Kirby's Return to Dreamland is something that has been sitting on my shelf for awhile now. Since I had all of today to goof, I decided to run through it real fast. It's a really good game - not as much fun as Kirby's Adventure or the amazing Kirby's Dreamland 2, but still a lot of fun. The colors and graphics are eye pleasing and the story, while predictable as hell, is a nice break from games about killing people.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
