"English friendly" Wonderswan games?

Post by General Chaos »

I've always wanted to give the Wonderswan a shot and after reading the 101 it sounds even more intriguing, but I'd like to start with some of the more English-friendly games. Any recommendations?

I went through this a couple of weeks ago. Saw a B/W Wonderswan on ebay for £3 so I had to buy it. The best way to find games is to get an WS emulator, download the entire library of games (you can usually spot an RPG from miles away, so skip them), and keep playing till you find ones you like. The two games I found that were pretty good were Anchor Field Z and Gunpey. But I didn't look at any of the colour games so you might find some that you like there.

Ended up buying Anchor Field Z. Its actually really good fun! Turn based strategy where you have to capture areas of the board by shooting three lines to make a triangle, with the final line returning to you base. You then capture the area inside that triangle. I'm not very good at explaining it so better to use an emulator. Theres a lot of Japanese text, but it doesn't ruin the gameplay.

Gunpey is a puzzle game where you have to move pieces to draw a continuous line accross the board. Again the best way to understand is to play it yourself so grab and emulator and get playing. Gunpey EX also came out which adds colour support, and there is a wierd Panda themed one called Tare Panda Gunpey or sumthing like that (I'd have to look it up and I'm on a bit of a rant now) which is even better, but only in B/W.

Seriously, the WS library is so small that you can find a couple of games you like in an evening using the emulator.

Oh and Wonderswan rocks! Buy one, you won't regret it.

EDIT: It's Tare Pan no Gunpei. Sorry I was on a rant :P

Thanks--the emulator thing is an excellent idea! I'm off to try out some games.

If you get the color version, I recommend both the Guilty Gear Petite titles. They make for some great fun for a hand held fighter.

Beatmania, if memory serves, is mostly if not totally in english. Also has the cool benefit of being played sideways.
Magical Drop and Puzzle Bobble require no japanese. Tekken Card Fighters can be played pretty easily as well.

The only game I have that I simply can't play is Cho Aniki Tamafuda and I got that one because I think it's a hilarious series, even if I can't play it.
