Why does everyone hate Bubsy?

Honest question, I have yet to see anyone say it's good, everyone says that even as kids they thought it was crap.

Horrible hit detection, 1-hit kills, physics are in general really wonky. Combine that with a really annoying character and yeah...

Really though, the rest of the Bubsy series almost looks kinda good compared to Bubsy 3D.

I put Bubsy in the most obnoxious video game character thread.
My guess is the reason that everyone hates it is that it was overhyped in EGM magazine back in the day.

It was Bubsy on the cover, it got a good review end everything was about Bubsy.
That EGM episode was one of the biggest issues ever 300+ pages
Then I got to play it on the SNES. What a pieeeeeeece of shihizzle it was. Everything imaginable about the game was bad. I also think it was a 16 MBit game which at the time was something special.
So you play the game, and you´re almost ready to kill yourself, you die and then you hear this sample: WHAT YOULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG
I´m pretty sure I´ll be hearing that sample looped if I were to go to hell.
Forget the Shaq Fu killing of cartridges, kill all Bubsy cartridges! Future generations will benefit not knowing of this game. I´m pretty sure your IQ will slowly shrink while playing Bubsy

Bubsy isn't completely worthless at all. Studying bad games is one of the ways you learn how good games work. You can learn a lot by figuring out exactly what went wrong.

I played it quite a bit as a kid and I remember enjoying it, though I also remember occasionally being quite frustrated by it. I beat it a few times back then.

'Course, I haven't touched it in years, so who knows how I'd feel about it now. I still have my original copy, so maybe I'll pop it in one of these days.

Well if you watch the TV special, it's really tough NOT to hate Bubsy the character.

The annoying thing about the game itself is that it's almost good. It's very close to being a fun game. But it isn't, so I'll start playing it every so often and lose interest/get frustrated pretty quickly and turn it off.

...Someday I want to beat that game. BECAUSE I'M A MASOCHIST LIKE THAT.

I think the worst thing about Bubsy, even more than all the 'floaty' graphics and generic gameplay is the camera, when teamed up with 1 hit kills.

You run fast, can barely see ahead of you, then you run into a enemy and die. Its horseshit design.

Bubsy (the first release) to me is actually a very fun game. i love the game challenge it brings...it's actually not that hard if you keep playing it over and over again (without your head exploding of course ). like Contra, you just have to remember what to do in situation given to you. definitely one of my favorites while growing up and i still play it from time to time just for nostalgic reason. love the music too! the one hit, you die never bothered me either.

now if were talking about the sequels....that's another story.

When i played i found myself constantly frustrated for the 1 hit kills and the large amount of enemies that are hard to see sometimes.

In paper Bubsy sound like at least a decent game but those small things kill it to me.
