Suggestions for Shiny New School Fighters on PC

Post by Nyukki »

I have an HTPC with HyperSpin and two USB 8 button arcade sticks connecteed to my HD TV. I mainly play older games on it, but I'm looking for some new school fighters to add to my "Windows Live Games" wheel. I've got Street Fighter IV, and I was hoping to get Tekken 6 as I play it in my local arcade, but it seems they haven't released a PC version.

Be it 2D or 3D, I'm looking for awesome fighters released on Windows that have awesome, shiny, colourful graphics. I've heard KOF13 was released on PC which is awesome, though I think that was an unofficial hack of the arcade version. So I'm still looking for other games to pad out my wheel.

I remember once coming across a free PC fighter called Vampire Princess or something, which had decent 2D anime graphics though not as flashy. Suggestions along these lines would be awesome too.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I should probably mention that I do not own an Xbox360 or PS3, so any PC versions of fighters on these platforms would be a good start. Cheers!

It's not the absolute latest edition of the game/series, but Guilty Gear X2 #Reload is on the PC, and available from GoG here.

I don't think there was an official KoF13 release, no. The game runs on a Taito Type X2 arcade setup, which is a Windows PC underneath, so it wouldn't really be much of a stretch. Blazblue and SFIV run on the same setup.

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
Street Fighter IV
Street Fighter IV: AE
Street Fighter VS Tekken
... are all on PC.

Also there are a lot of great Japanese doujin fighting games like Vanguard Princess. There are other examples in the "doujin" link in my signature.

Also google "MUGEN" and "OpenBOR" and you will find a lot of fighting games for PC, though many of them are crappy.

I know Melty Blood is a long-running series that looks interesting to me.

@J T: Many thanks, have heard of BlazBlue, looks awesome. Street Fighter VS Tekken sounds right up my street, does it play like a 3D Tekken game (or a Street Fighter EX game) or like a 2D SF game? Vanguard Princess is the one I mistook earlier for Vampire Princess, downloaded it ages ago but couldn't get it to run as the installation instructions were all in Japanese. Will check out your Doujin games link.

@Nemoide: I have Melty Blood: Act Cadenza running through a Naomi emulator although haven't tried it yet as I am having trouble getting my joysticks to work with Makaron.

SFxT plays more like a Street Fighter game, but every hit has some degree of juggle to it. This gives longer combos an emphasis, which is unusual for Street Fighter. The tag system doesn't allow for traditional assists, but you can do a tag-in attack (which is necessary for a lot of longer combos). The battles take place on a 2D plane, unlike Tekken. I want to say imagine a more combo-intensive Street Fighter with an emphasis on juggle physics, but it does have a unique feel to it that's hard to express.
