If I read his post right, he says that both ends of the jumpers he's working with are getting 5V, when it should actually be 5V and ground, hence why Wily Wars isn't working on his system.theclaw wrote:Is that good or bad?

Re: How does Wily Wars do region protection?
So we could actually be looking at a useful new discovery for 50hz only TV owners? Getting to play NTSC locked games in 50hz is better than a lockout screen. Un-ideal as the slowdown is.

Re: How does Wily Wars do region protection?
Well no because thats what we can do with the mod when it works correctly, which for the OP it is not.
Anyhoo, some games work better at 50hz like Sonic 3 - the frame rate is far more stable when running in PAL mode

Re: How does Wily Wars do region protection?
Huh. Doesn't the mod working correctly mean you have to boot 60hz, than switch to 50hz? While this "error" grants the benefit of starting otherwise 60hz locked games right in 50hz?

Re: How does Wily Wars do region protection?
Even before I started doing any mod work I measured continuity between the four points making up the JP3 and JP4 cluster and I got some unexpected results. I remember that no matter which two point I checked there was continuity between them which puzzled me.
Then I started to scrape away at the space between the points in hopes of removing all continuity but I was only able to remove it between certain points. I thought that was fine until the whole setup gave me strange results.
Anyhow, the Genie will arrive soon. I just hope all this experimenting has not damaged the system in any way. Those weird lines have me worried a bit.

I still think it would be a good idea to take pictures of your attempt. I've done a few of these and I can easily tell if something's gone wrong. I know you're afraid of opening it up again but showing us exactly what's going on can give us a big help.

It's likely not the same type of lines, but... Are you by chance using RGB or some way to convert into s-video/component/etc? Master System and Genesis family hardware is prone to vertical bars in certain scenarios.kamiboy wrote:Even before I started doing any mod work I measured continuity between the four points making up the JP3 and JP4 cluster and I got some unexpected results. Re: How does Wily Wars do region protection?
I am using an RGB SCART cable, though the artifacts are horizontal. It seems the Genesis is just putting out a somewhat funky video signal as the screen is a tad warped in places which is not the case with other consoles. But then with my CRT each console's signal has its own tiny quirks so no big deal.
The Genie arrived in the mail yesterday and I managed to finally play some Wily Wars by using the region circumvention code.
After several hours of gaming everything seemed to be in order, so thanks all but nevermind about the mod. It is not worth the trouble to waste any more time on it. At least I got a semi functioning 50/60hz switch out of it which will come in handy if I manage to land a reasonable priced PAL copy of Alien Soldier.
Seeing as how that and Wily Wars are the only two games I would have needed the mod for I say punching in the occasional Genie code is no big deal, better than to tempt fate and kill the Genesis while trying to force the mod.
