Know any good GB/C RPGs?

Post by WallCrusher »

Aside from Pokémon and Dragon Warrior, that is. I already own all of those games. :)

Recently I've discovered new interest in those wonderful old Gameboy games, and want to sit down and play an RPG to pass by the time. I was playing Dragon Warrior I & II again but I really would like to cover some new territory, but I realized that I don't know of any games in particular, and everyone I've asked thus far is clueless.

The only game I can think of that I'm interested in is Final Fantasy Adventures, but... does anyone else have any recommendations to look into? I'd prefer in English, as I know very little Japanese.

Legend of the River King and Metal Walker were fun, also if you want an action RPG I'd go with Crystalis .

It sounds like it'd be worth playing for just being the last GBC game released in NA alone. ;)

Legend of the River King and Metal Walker look cool from what I've seen. I'll look more into those. As for Crystalis... I'm not that picky about my types of RPGs. Action, strategy, turn-based, I'm all for it. I've heard though that the NES version of Crystalis was considered to be way better, though?

The resolution isn't as good, but that's to be expected since it was ported to a portable system, but the game itself was just as fun.

I believe that there were several other Harry Potter handheld RPGs, but this was the only one I ever played. I beat it to completion around the time it released, it really is a stellar licensed game.

Lufia: The Legend Returns is pretty fun, and has an interesting battle system/party setup. There's also Revelations: The Demon Slayer, but I'm only a little bit into that. That one's an SMT spinoff.

Azure Dreams is another RPG that may interest you.

It's also came out on playstation, but the same core game exists on GB. But I do believe there is more of a collecting aspect of this game on GB.

Pokemon did that and other companies followed suit.

Try it emulated and see if its worth it.

Dont know how much its worth now.

Lufia: the Legend Returns (as already mentioned) is well thought of. I really need to play through that sometime.

RPG's with a bit more action would be the 2 Rolan's Curse games and the Ultima: Runes games. But get FF: Adventure 1st. That game is all kinds of awesome.
The FF: Legends are okay too (not action games at all, unlike FF: Adventure); but I always got stuck in them. (All games in this paragraph are original GB games).

Concerning Crystalis: while the game plays well enough on GBC, it's the changed music that I always had issues with. I really missed the NES soundtrack.

Harvest Moon 3 on the Game Boy Color (the only handheld 8-bit harvest moon worth anything imo) was fun.

Also Stranded/Survival Kids was good, and actually better than the "Lost in Blue" sequels imo (the top down 2D perspective gave it much more charm than the poor 3D graphics ever did)
