Re: Annoying Things in Otherwise Great Games
Here is my rant from the "I Love My Neo Geo Pocket Color!" thread: "For some reason, I just can't get fully into MotM. It's a fun game, but there are all these little things that infuriate me. For one, Vega and Billy Kane aren't playable. That wouldn't be too much of a problem, but they already made sprites for them. It just seems like a waste to make new sprites instead of using ones that are already there. Next is unlocking characters. After playing through arcade mode, you see a grid, which blocks are then removed from. Once all the blocks are gone, you unlock a character. What infuriates me is that instead of doing something reasonable and simply eliminating some of the blocks that are there, it picks random spaces. I've played through arcade mode with Capcom characters twenty times and I still don't have B.B. Hood. GIVE ME B. B. HOOD DANGIT!
Next, the minigames. While it was nice of the creators to include them, the SNK ones are just terrible. Blade Arts feels weird because you have to use the buttons to attack sideways but the joystick to attack up. It's confusing. Target 9, while fun, is the only time where I ever wished the NGPC had a D-Pad. The joystick is way too inaccurate.
I really want to like this game more, and while I love it, I just don't think it's nearly as good as everyone says." Don't worry guys, I have B. B. Hood now.
From another SNK game, the sewer level in Metal Slug 2/X. The rest of the game is exciting and fast paced, but not this one. Not only is shooting at those doors for half the level boring, but the mutant things are annoying since they explode when killed and there's tons of them. All for the unsatisfying payoff of the most boring boss in the game. I can't exactly remember what it was, but I think it was some kind of boat.
Also, it's kind of sad that a third of the characters in the first Soul Calibur are all clones of other characters.

Having to cycle through four weapons with one button in the first Medal of Honor. Not having a melee option.

Anything where the text is super slow and unskippable. I want to read it, but at my pace.
The hoverboard bit in Conker's Bad Fur Day. It might just be because I'm rubbish at it, but dammit it's hard.
The Marble zone in Sonic 1. Ok it's a well crafted level, and Sonic is still pretty awesome, but it is so slow, especially after the unrestrained pace of Green Hill.

This always confused me as people's most hated enemy. I found I died for more frequently to bats and jetpack ninjas.BoneSnapDeez wrote:- Weapon charging in Secret of Mana.
- Lack of classic controller support in Donkey Kong Country Returns.
- Unnecessary Wiimote minigames in Tales of Symphonia 2 (and many other Wii games for that matter).
- The leveling system in Final Fantasy II.
- THE GOD DAMN EAGLES. I don't even have to mention the game, you know what I'm talking about.

Yuzo Koshiro's chaotic soundtrack for Streets of Rage 3. The boss music has moments of goodness, but most of the level music is just out of control. Lots of fuzz, beeps and bloops, and rapid fire drumming instead of recognizable tunes. Not my thing.
Samples here.
I do like the song at 3:46, which is an actual song, and of course, the closing credits song which retains a familiar Streets of Rage theme.
Golden Axe 2 disappointed me by coloring certain enemies in hot pink, and by having slain enemies let out a disinterested, "Bleh" when they die. That's what I'm going to say at the end of my life. "Bleh!"

"Striker from Crash FM" in Burnout 3. Nothing like an omnipresent radio host quipping in about his thong bikini or teaching me how to play again to ruin some good explosions.

Some times in Planescape: Torment one of my characters starting attacking one of his/her allies after I've set up my targets, spells etc. I think certain way of clicking things triggers some command which makes the character target last targeted character, which in this case is one of the party members. Oh, and killing one of your party members accidentally just when a long battle is coming to an end just because you used a spell like chain lightning too carelessly

Tutorial levels. Especially in sequels. These pop up all over. I enjoy the entire game, except the tutorials.

Re: Annoying Things in Otherwise Great Games
I did that as well when I first had the game back in the day, before my former roommate's jackass brother "borrowed" it from me in college and I never got it back. It wasn't until years later when I purchased the game again when I actually switched the weapons cycling function, because my friend Mike at the time played it and he used the X button to cycle through the weapons. I did this and I never went back to the select button.Gunstar Green wrote:Not sure if this is a popular opinion or not but...
Cycling through all the weapons with the select button in Super Metroid. It's so hard to go back to this control scheme after Fusion and Zero Mission did it so much better with the shoulder buttons.
Also, accidentally picking up a crappier weapon in just about ever shmup and run 'n gun that exists. Argh!
Oddly enough, that's why I didn't like the shoulder button weapon cycling in Fusion and Zero Mission, if for one reason, and that was I was so used to using the shoulder buttons in Super Metroid to aim diagonally up or down, and the other two games you could only do one because the other shoulder button cycled the weapons.
I do agree with picking up crappier weapons in run n gun/shmup games.
Picking up the laser in Contra 3 =
Accidentally picking up the crusher missile in place of laser =
Picking up flame to replace crusher missile =

Visual Aid

Oh and the bees from the first level of Ducktales. They suck too with their slower pattern and fucking up my pogo'ing.
