So it sounds like the outer ground was messed up and not connecting. Glad you got it fixed.

It seems like EDTVs are indeed great for older gen stuff as long as they're ok with old 240 signals. You have a lot better chance for having an s-video jack for systems that support that. 'Flicker' style shadows on systems that couldn't do transparency are a little janky at times, but usually it is good IMHO. I'll try to take some pictures of what I get on my TV later.
