SNK/Neo-Geo Appreciation thread

Post by dunpeal2064 »

I've been recently getting into SNK stuff, and now that I know Noise has as well, I figured we should have a place to talk anything SNK or Neo Geo.

I personally have recently been blown away by the depth of Metal Slug. I am playing the second game in the series, and it is just epic. I love the amount of secrets (and the way they work into scoring), and the bosses are just huge! This is the first and only MS game I have played, and I can't wait to try the others.

...unless you're playing with a friend. 4 and on are still fun for drinking and gaming on a slow afternoon.

OP, are you going to be getting into hardware collection now?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

4 is an abomination. 5 is subpar for MS. I personally enjoy 6.

Metal Slug really is the quintessential Run 'n Gun. That game is a masterpiece in every category. In terms of the first 3, I'd say 1 < 2 < 3. If you're really digging 2, 3 will absolutely blow you away with its supreme awesomeness (they're comparable but I still put 3 higher up). The series does get weaker after that, at the very least 6 is worth playing and you should try 5 as a fan. 4 was handled by a third party developer, and is really just a mess. Load it up in an emulator just to say you've played it.

Don't play Metal Slug 2. Play metal Slug X.

I can understand the love as much as anybody, but we don't need an appreciation thread for everything guys. If you are a true snk fan, then join the neo-geo forums. Simple.

@Flake: I don't quite plan on collecting hardware, as it gets quite pricey. I am pretty happy with my mvs mobo. I do love how cheap mvs stuff is

Honestly, I figured a lot of people here probably play SNK stuff on hardware other than NG, and thus might not be over on ng.com.

Plus, all there is is a, "What ng game are you playing" thread, in which I was the last poster... several days ago.

There is already more conversation in this thread than in that one.

This is the kind of thread that tends to police itself. If people lose interest it will just go away.

@Dunpeal - if you are not going to get into hardware, definitely make sure to look up some of the compilations out there. One of SNK's understated strengths in todays market is how simple it is to accurately emulate so much of their catalog.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
