Planning on getting new PC - tell me wat u think of this one

Looking around at prices, it seems the route with the best value would be to buy the prebuilt and upgrade the power supply and video card. Not having to buy the OS, having a quad-core instead of dual-core processor, and the massive hard drive are all very attractive.

For $650 (don't you dare think about cheaping out on your power supply) you could build a quad-core and a terabyte hard drive, and have a much nicer everything else to boot.

Can I use just about any power supply in any PC, or are there special cord types and whatnot that I need to be aware of? I'm thinking I could take my current power supply and use it in the prebuilt.

Almost all power supplies are ATX, which is normal. There are some special types every so often but they usually mention in the description if they will only fit certain cases. while the quad is nice it is 1 Ghz slower then the dual. just something to consider. To get a big enough power supply and a good brand/built and something around a HD 6770 or so would cost 207 dollars. That is what I am planning for my dekstop(cost 380 plus monitor)

Exactly, if power supply screws up it has a large chance of frying everything else in the computer. if you want quad it would be around 580 for a 3.0Ghz Athlon II X4 using the build I listed or for about 20 less you could get a 3.3Ghz AMD athlon II X3, just a thought. Or for around 600 you could have a AMD HD 6850, which is still considered a good mid range gaming card. with the quad core or 580 with triple core.

Just something to consider... With the OS that puts you right in the same price range as the pre-built w/ upgrades. If $650 is pushing your budget too much, you can always size down on the hard drive (or hope for a refurb sale) and swap the intel motherboard/processor for some of the AMD suggestions that Atari has been listing, or alternatively go with the less powerful Core i3.

Yes, but I can use the prebuilt for an indefinite length of time before upgrading. The custom build is useless until I buy the OS.

should only take a week at most to get the parts. Building it only takes a hour or two at the most, maybe a little longer if it is your first build. If so always remember to either use a static strap or hold onto the metal case. even a small amount of static shock,even something you can't feel could possible damage a computer part when putting together.
