ps2 slim or fat model help

Post by mas »

Hi Everybody,
My slim ps2 finally died on me and I spent 8 bucks at the flea market on sunday to only find out that the dvd drive went. Now I'm picking one up friday but now Im mixed on what model slim or fat. Was there a major difference between the two and if i decide to get a fat model how can I tell to make sure I don't have an early model that mthe dvd drive is dead. Thanks. Which one does everybody else like also the slim or fat model?

I've heard that the fat v7 models (SCPH-3900x, I think) are the most all around reliable.

I have yet to find a decent PS2 at the fleamarket for a price that i like.

PS2's (in my opinion) are common like NES's were back in the day.

It being a so popular system. They are all over. But pristine and clean they are not.

The easiest answer would be to go buy a slim at the store/online. They're still available.

But if you still have all your old accessories or maybe the PHAT nostalgia, you may want your old system.

Which aren't as reliable as they should be. And I'll bet that new phat ps2's in box are quite expensive.

so shop accordingly.

one more thing.

If you do find a slim ps2 at the fleamarket. There are some revisions as well.

but It pretty much boils down to two types.

the first version with a special plug. Yellow tipped and boxy in the middle.

The second version that uses a normal cord (like PS1, DC and PHAT ps2)

There are also some limited colors PStwos. With the silver and white consoles more common(?)

But they all still run the risk of having a messed up dvd drive if you buy them used.

I would go with a phat and get a network adapter and HDD to play games of the HDD, this way the laser will last longer.

Do you still have the slim?
Is the laser the only problem?
Which model scph is it?

I'm not sure if you are looking for a stock or modded system, but I have a 39001 chipped for sale.

Get the Fat PS2. Even if you might not want to use the Hard Drive, at least the option is there in case you change your mind later. I have both an earlier and later fat models, both have HDAdvance which maybe helps prolong the life. For a later model just look for one without the firewire port.

If you did want to get a Slim, the supplies online seem to be low, but I did see that my local Best Buy has them on clearance for $59.99. Not sure if that's national or what, but it sure beats the $165 that Amazon is quoting for them right now
