I feel that if this ever becomes a kickstarter we are all backing it

Old consoles never die, they just make us all weepy and nostalgic for our youth.

Re: When Does a Console Die?
The Vectrex was one good example of technological limitations on the life of a console.
I was given a HD flatscreen tube TV last year by one of my neighbors. I accepted it because I was under the impression that all tube TV's would work with my light gun games. I thought I'd read that the light guns didn't work on the HD panel TV's. I moved the monster upstairs, removed the old SD monster and the accompanying stand.
A couple of weeks later, I wanted to play Lethal Enforcers - I can't hit a single bad guy. I try out Duck Hunt - those guys sure seem tougher than they used to and that dog keeps laughing at me.
I then cheat and put the zapper right up to the screen. Nothing!
Soooo... refresh rates, tech speak, blah blah blah. Now I need a SD TV to allow use light guns.
Cable connections and the need for legacy screens will be limiting factors for collectors moving forward.

I need a new CRT as well. My current one screws up and works in color when it wants to. I now have to use the living room tv (which is luckily CRT for light gun games), but I can't say my family likes the idea of the floor cluttered with consoles from about all the generations.

Check my sig for my opinion
(severe defects and irreparably damaged systems being the exceptions of course).
As long as it can still be played, it's not dead.
And since you still occasionally see (small/fan/etc.) releases for older systems, I never really count something out anyways.

Disc based consoles will die when all lenses are broken, and all discs have disc rot...

That will be a sad, sad day for ANY of my CD systems. I hope I don't see it in my lifetime.
I haven't looked into it much, but I hope there's a way to at least replace the laser lenses on the console.
The DVD systems, can often be re-purposed when combined with hacks and hard drives. So I don't fear as much for them.
Actually, I also heard about a PS1 hard drive project somewhere on this forum. I wonder if that will ever pan out (and if you'd need a disc to boot).
