N64 and Gamecube sold fewer units but returned a higher profit. Go look it up. It's been discussed to death in many places.

I'll take your word for it. I may be wrong, but let's not turn this into a Nintendo VS the world thread (there are already plenty of those).

The point of my original statement was missed. I did not specify whether Microsoft would be truthful in a statement about beating said companies at their own games. I simply meant that they would feel that they were successful enough to come out and say it. I probably should have worded it differently. My bad.

I sort of took that as a given since MS, like a lot of other companies, does that type of thing constantly already. I was just pointing out that it would be empty self-congratulations--which I suppose is just stating the obvious.
