I do think it's kinda silly though to make such a judgement on such a broad... category? (I'd hesitate to call it a genre, it's closer to a medium).

sigh....ok, let this thread be derailed.

I believe there are some amazing niche anime out there with original plots, well developed characters, and wonderful animation.

But the majority of them are shonen, stuff that is filled with "cheap" spectacle (fight scenes that keep repeating themselves, dramatic movement for small things) and they hide the cheapness of the animation (everyone is always very still, moving very slowly, people just standing there and talking, and during the fast moving battles, as I said, repetition. TONS of it).

Plus I hate a bunch of anime cliches. (kawai girl who is USELESS, bullies, "I will become stronger", the training arc (done BAD, or even worse done 5 times)

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT this doesn't mean there don't exist amazing niche anime out there, or that some mainstream anime aren't FUN to watch (Dragonball <3 (the original)).

I just think that it was amazingly silly how I was brainwashed by the cheap tricks to think that a bunch of anime were more than they seemed to be. So from now on I'm a LOT more critical of it than most people who still believe anime to be original (har har) and something amazing.

Like all animation from all countries and cultures of origin, there's amazing stuff, and then there's bad which becomes successful.

And btw, no anime never really got censored here. If the channel didn't like the content, it just showed the anime outside the children's block. Though I did hear a few parents complain about the violence sometimes. Nudity is ok here (violence is the big no-no). The only censorship I've seen was the sexes of some trans sexual characters, but that might have been an honest mistake, cause usually they pick up the anime episodes from a bunch of countries and re-translate them (so very few episodes were taken directly from Japan), and sometimes things get mixed up (I still remember for the entire first Digimon season they kept calling TK a girl xD)

Maybe you should stop watching anime aimed at children then? :P Then you can start complaining how sexistic and misogynistic anime is and how it's full of oniichan/2D is superioir/lonely nerd suddenly gets all the chicks etc clichés

Like with any form of entertainment, most of the mass produced stuff is shit. And they mostly show the mass produced stuff in TV, because it sells better and there's not enough demand for the niché stuff. The same thing applies to anime. Watch stuff like Welcome to the N.H.K., Neon Genesis Evangelion, Serial Experiements Lain and Hayao Miyazakis movies if you want to see good anime

I wouldn't say that the God-awful computer animated crap they're showing in TV nowadays has higher production values than old hand-drawn cartoons
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

In other words, more or less exactly like I said.

Most of the cliche's you mention are pretty strongly rooted in shonen/young boy's stuff. Naturally, they're also the shows that seem to most often get brought overseas and shown on TV. If they seem dumb to you, it's probably partially because you're way over the age of the target audience  .

There's good stuff everywhere, and you agree, so yeah. Not much to say there!

Statements like this, though, I find a little strange. Not necessarily the fact that you're being negative, but the idea of having any sort of quality assessment over so wide a category. It's like somebody proclaiming something like "Ps2 games are incredible." Sure, there are many fantastic Ps2 games, but there are also many awful Ps2 games, so.... I'm kinda having trouble explaining what I mean here, but you get the idea right?

I have a few Get A Long comics in a long box somewhere. I loved Star comics as a kid. I'll admit to having HUGGA BUNCH #1-3 (it was a gift) and tons of Fraggle Rock, He-Man, Muppet Babies, Heathcliff, Spider-Ham, Alf and others of that ilk.

Idk but at least there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel. I can think of a few shows that are cartoons that are pretty good that are new.

Image

Of course adventure time.

Image

This is actually a pretty good show despite what the commercials for it will have you think. They mention a lot about pop culture in the 80's 90's, and one time had an entire episode spoofing "The Wizard" even with the "It's so bad" line that has now become a joke.

Image

This is also a pretty good show. It could ease up on the stereotypical Japanese anime faces and stuff, but otherwise pretty good.

I wasn't so making fun of the medium as I was of the fanbase. 95% of anime fans I've met refuse to even consider the artistic merits of simpler western cartoons cause they don't involve over dramatic stories. (Overdramatic plot points + violence/sex != mature show)

And yes I will complain about the more adult stuff being sick too  . Who the fuck goes to animation school for X years, ands up drawing animated teenage (way out of proportion) boobs, and is happy with his life?

I said I've seen some good story anime, but for example NGE which Menegrothx mentioned is a good example of everything I hate about anime hype ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq0LIe2ATGI
 ).

I agree that there is good deep anime, but I hate how its fanbase never looks for deeper American animation, and doesn't even TOUCH European animation.

FFS French is a much easier language to fansub from compared to Japanese.

So basically it's the hype that gets to me. It's like saying every good video game in the 90s came from Japan, without playing PC games at the time. You have to look for quality everywhere, and I am a douchebag and I look for flaws everywhere

That doesn't mean I can't enjoy something flawed. No matter how immature and cheesy One Piece is I still love it so much. And I don't care that the level design in Sonic 2 was more balanced, I still find S&K to be a better experience for me. You see? The over fanboyism and "saint" status of anime in the eyes of the internet has turned me a bit against it.

I want all amazing forms of art to get exposure.
