I haven't played many of them at all myself, but from the discussions we've had before it sounds like IV and V are good starting points, as well as the GBC remakes mentioned, and maybe even VIII.
The SNES remake of III looks really cool too, awesome graphics and everything. So if you start with I-II and go with the GBC remakes, maybe you can go with that for III.
What RPG are you playing right now?
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
While you can get something out of playing the Dragon Quest series in order (that's how I'm doing it and it's fun to see how the series evolved) I'd say to just go for the DS versions of IV, V, or VI - they're the easiest to get and are all great games. DQ V is my pick for a first DQ game, I really liked how it handled the marriage/children aspect of the story.
I'm playing them in order because that's how I roll with pretty much everything, but aside from I-III, the stories aren't connected.

Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
As someone who has played and beaten all of the major Dragon Quest installments, and from participating in many a discussion about the series, I would say III, IV, V, and VIII are all good places to start. IV is my favorite game in the series so I personally recommend it.
Of all of the games, though, I would definitely save VII for later. I've seen some people play it first and it gives them... the wrong impression of the series. Not to say that it is a bad game--on the contrary, it is one of my favorites--but as been mentioned before, the game has a very slow start, and the pacing is slow in general. Its a very rewarding experience however, but I'd still say wait until you are feeling "hardcore" enough when it comes to DQ.

visited my mom n dad this weekend for Father's Day!!
didnt bring any games with me lol I was so bored.
did have my iphone tho so I played thru all of Saturday Morning RGP.
it's fun. The thing that sucks is all the sidequests are fetch quests, but other than that it's pretty straight forward.
there's only 2 episodes out now, but I think I'll pick up the rest of then when they come out.

Still playing Witcher 2. I haven't been playing nearly as much, so I'm trying to get through it. Its a great game, and I'm loving it. I'm not sure how soon, or if I will ever replay though. I'll have to see how I feel, and whether or not the first game gets a console release.

Been playing more Persona 3 Portable again, getting ready for the next Operation Day.
Also I've been playing Illusion of Gaia and just got past the Great Wall of China, and I've picked Tales of the Abyss for 3DS up again. I've been playing the game on Hard and man does this game really get difficult with the boss fights. I fought Sync and Largo at Zao Ruins and they totally obliterated my party.

I've made it about 15 hours into SMT III lately. This game is good, and I mean good. I've always been a fan of SMT, but they really got it right with this one. I love the wide array of effective offensive and defensive styles that the game has to offer. Everything between buffs, debuffs, physical attacks, and magic attacks all prove very effective. The enemy designs are great (so great in fact that they were reused in Persona 3
) and once again SMT delivers on the philosophical front. I also find the press turn system dramatically superior to the "one more" system in the Persona games, it makes the game feel more balanced and decreases the rock paper scissors factor without making it unimportant. The game is challenging because it makes you strategize rather than simply pull out your big attacks for every battle. I also like how your options for refilling your HP/SP are limited, it adds good tension to the dungeons. Besides all that navigation isn't a huge pain like it was in the SFC games
.
The one thing that I feel like criticizing is the negotiation system, it feels really finicky and sometimes downright random in this one. I'm also not sure how I feel about alignment not affecting the game at all (besides the ending of course). On one hand, I like not having doors closed in my face because of decisions I've made (I try to play neutral in these games so that I get to fight everyone), but I feel like it hurts the immersion that the morality of your actions isn't significant to how the story unfolds, especially in an SMT game (again, at least until the very end).

Are you planning on going for the extra ending that was added to the Maniacs release (which is the version we got)? It adds in a long difficult dungeon and a new final boss who's hard as balls.

SMT III = Nocturne right? Damn you're making it sound awesome.
