Your character is much more agile than a typical Zelda game and so are the enemies. Ys is really difficult, especially if you stubbornly refuse to grind. After realizing I was spending more time trying not to grind and dying repeatedly instead, I eventually gave in and started grinding.

"Consult an FAQ already" no fucking kidding! These bosses are owning me.

I can't seem to get the lunge move to work. What am I doing wrong?

Grind moar. :(

Are you playing Felghana or Origins? I know that's an "achievement" in Felghana for dying too many times. I'm not sure what you mean by lunge, but there are some distinctions in jump attacks. If you attack in the upward arc of your jump, you slash in the air at flying enemies, but if you attack in the downward arc of your jump, you slam the ground, which is good for stunning enemies and certain armored baddies.

Also, I am getting really sick of dying before checkpoints. I'm about ready to rage quit this game entirely, but I really enjoy the feel of the combat. I finally got some teleporting item which should make my life easier for hitting savepoints though. Still, even with that, I try to push through dungeons and get too cocky and end up dead before the next save point. It's so infuriating.

I'm playing Felghana. The "achievement" is called "Consult an FAQ Already" and unlocking that was right about the point I decided this game was a total dick.

From the in-game manual:
Lunge attack: Attack immediately after coming to a stop
^Not working!

I didn't need to grind; I missed a really important item and in doing so turned the second boss into a grueling battle of attrition. Definitely agree about the checkpoints, that's what finally pried me away from the game.

I just tried to fire it up again. I have no idea how to lunge. Everything I try just gives me the standard attack or the next strike in the combo.

And I again got deep in a cave and died only to lose everything. :x

ಠ_ಠ Chester.

I don't think I need to grind more... I can keep my xp multiplier at x1.99 pretty well just clearing rooms the first time, so I don't think I'm behind at all. And how can they expect me to go back and grind when the last checkpoint was at the beginning of the level?

Are you using Ravel Ore to enhance your weapons back at the main town? That makes a huge difference.

Otherwise, you have to be this good:
