Sega Saturn RAM questions

Post by kevers7290 »

Hi. I'm new to the forums, so I'd like to first introduce myself. My name is Kyle, and I have a newfound affinity for the Sega Saturn!
So here goes:
I'm considering buying the Action Replay Ram cartridge, but I have a few questions before I do...
-My first question: I just bought the street fighter collection for the saturn (the one that includes street fighter 2 and alpha 2) and I was wondering if it supports the optional 1/4 mb Ram cart? I know it's not on the list, but I was curious if it had a kind of "hidden" support like X-men. I don't have the cartridge yet, so I can't test it.
-Second: Does RAM provide a general boost to the saturn's processing power? Like, will it make the graphics of all games supported or not look slightly crisper?
I appreciate any and all feedback.
Thanks.

1. IIRC, no, Street Fight Collection II does not provide optional support for the RAM carts.

2. The RAM cart provides additional memory to the system for certain games to have additional frames of animation, reduced loading times, and in most cases, it's a requirement. It won't make the graphics look crisper, and it doesn't work for all games; just those specifically supported, which almost all should be noted somewhere online.

I would say it reduced the amount of times it loads...The initial load can take some time, since it has more to load into RAM.

Groove on Fight (only a 1M cart game) does have some "good" load times prior to the match (loading 4 charactors). I only recall this because I played it recently.

Xmen COTA does not support the RAM carrt in any way if I recall correct. You might be mistaking it with MSH!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I'm going to buy the Ram cartridge anyway, in case I want to import some games or if I buy any that support it.

Yeah you're right. It was Marvel Super Heroes that I meant, sorry.

Note action replay does not change video mode. You'd still have to modify the Saturn for that.

NTSC console stays 60hz playing PAL games.
PAL console stays 50hz playing NTSC games.

Another thing is it obviously takes up the slot. it cannot be used together with the direct-save backup cart, meaning imports with large save files must use system memory when played. And won't run games needing their own special carts.

I do forget, but was there ever an Expansion RAM / Memory Cart combo cart? (Or was there something preventing the direct-save-ability Memory Cart from using any other feature?)

Also, aren't you on GameFAQs as Lum_Yatsura?

yes, the action replay plus serves as a 1m/4m ram cart (depending on the game) and sereves as a memory cart. it also lets you play japanese games on your american saturn and allows you to enter cheats. a very handy device

It doesn´t get cripsier than Sega Saturn´s graphics. You probably are not using an RGB cable. For best results find a tv/monitor that accepts RGB. It will look as crispy sharp as VGA!
