Five? Aren't there like a dozen? Or is my gaming sense failing?
Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II' Champion Edition
Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting
Super Street Fighter II
Super Street Fighter II Turbo

at least those are all the 'major' ones that I'm counting

I've said this before, but I pine for the day that a Shining Force III Complete Collection is released. (I doubt my Saturn will ever be modded for the fan translations).
And original team or not, I think they can handle a Strategy RPG well enough for a remake.

add
Super Street Fighter II Turbo: Revival
and
Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition

to that list.

But as for the core 5 versions, I say yes, it was very necessary to bring us the very best version of the game. What if Street Fighter II was the ONLY game in the series? There was so much potential left to unlock.
...just another lost soul...

I know I'd do the same if I had been the lead programmer on one of the greatest series of games on a console only to have it pissed on by the company after I left.

In a lot of ways I feel they're already going this route, though. In the last few years they seem to be drastically slowing development of games in house in favor of digital re-releases. I do think they still have some worthwhile offerings, though. (Valkyrie Chronicles, Yakuza, Virtua Fighter. Virtua Tennis and Virtual-on are still going I guess, although I haven't actually played the most recent entries to know if they're still up to snuff.) Just not too much that's new and exciting. I think that's what their publishing efforts are trying to distract from.
