I started up a couple new old games that I had laying around to tide me over until Raiden Fighter Aces gets here.

-Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon: This game kicks ass. I wrote some light impressions of the first few missions elsewhere.
Sabrage wrote:I got around to playing the first couple of missions of this tonight. I completely skipped the tutorial and seem to be no worse off - a good sign for any game. The beginner's missions are painfully slow, but I think the game is just starting to pick up: I just added a second ship to my fleet and was granted the option to customize my own crews (Captain, First Mate, gunners, riggers) and armament (standard pew pew fare) for the first time. As someone that has traditionally bounced off of space combat games and RTS alike because they're too complicated, I guess I can't complain about the slow start too much... But this one really does play and control like a naval skirmisher. The potential for up to 10 ships in my fleet is very enticing indeed. I'll get some screenshots up as soon as I figure out where the damn game is saving them. Here's a demo link

Obligatory PC checklist:
-no 1080p
-no way to disable mouse smoothing
-clunky UI
-no way to hotkey individual weapons (as far as I can tell)
-camera is locked to currently selected unit
-full voiceovers
-surprisingly decent writing, but certainly nothing spectacular or provocative
-smooth install
-looks fantastic for a 2002 game in full 3D
-doesn't play nice with my second monitor

Oh, and it came with a fairly nice (30 page, B&W) manual with a reference of each of the ship types (without counting I'd say there's about 25-30?) and weapons.
...And it's only gotten better for me since I wrote that.
-Fortix 2: this is a Qix clone. It's also super annoying, but I like Qix so I'll probably finish it.
-Rochard: Boring physics-based "indie" puzzle-platformer. The combat is asinine, the puzzles fairly simple and never imaginative, and you can't skip the cutscenes. It does have some impressive production values, but I'd rather have seen that money poured into a more compelling end-product.
-Majesty Gold: I really like this game. It's pretty hard to explain without a frame of reference. It's basically an RTS where you don't directly control your units. The closest I've played would be the Warcraft 3 custom Castle Fight (which I lost countless hours to) or its Starcraft 2 successor Desert Strike. Your subjects all have agendas and goals of their own, so trying to maneuver your units where you need them to go can be pretty tricky. I've hit a goddamned brick wall in terms of difficulty, though, and after only a couple of missions.

@sabrage I got Blade of Darkness! I will let you know what I think, when I get around to installing it.

I'm quite possibly more excited about this than you are. Have I mentioned that I really like this game?

Metroid: Other M

This game still amazes me. The setting is easily as compelling as Super Metroid's Zebes or Metroid Prime's Tallon IV.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Would like to play this at some point. I own it, I just have this thing in my head that won't let me turn on my Wii, I'm getting it looked at. :S

This is a very fun game, and it does have a great setting. Since it is a Metroid game, I wish there had been a little more aimless wandering and a little less direction, but I have no complaints otherwise. Also, the "secret" boss is AWESOME.
