You start off this game with a nice story cut showing a battle of the titans which leads to a battlefield fights. When I started playing i was a bit confused at the battle system but once i got used to it i was having a blast. Although I will say that it can be a bit confuseing and the game does not explain everything very well but I figured it out anyways.
I remember hearing about this game when it was released There was alot of hype infact every reviewer on the internet praised it which scares me cause whenever a game is set at such a high pedaltal I expect to be disappointing but i remember seeing videos and thinking it looked pretty good, a To my surprise, Nintendo of America actually took a risk and released the game. The question is was it worth the wait? One look at my ranking should make it obvious. For fans of the publisher Monolith Software this game does not have any relation to Xenogears or Xenosaga (Thank god) I'm not really a fan of xenosaga as i found it long and boring full of useless cut scenes about soup. but does have some minor similarities. For example, magic is called ether and it has futuristic aspects. The story follows Shulk, A man studying the mysterious Monado blade, and his journey to stop the evil race of machines called the Mechon. This might sound boring but it's everything but. the story has major plot twists even early on. I was shocked by some events that took place earley into the game, I won't spoil it for you. There is a cast of likable characters, The main being shulk, reyn, the love interest.
Each one having their own abilities in combat and interesting backstories. There's ton's of cutscenes in the game, and alot to unlock though something called heart to heart which is based on if you build your chracter affinity together which you can do by fighting and giving gifts. (gifts are not the best method since it takes ton's). Back to the story it's all well written and voiced rather well with the an american cast. The only dissapointment is that you can noy choose the original jap cast with subtitles which can be upsetting to some but i liked the american actors even though you will read alot of complaints.
What makes this game really fun is the battle system. Enemies wonder freely around the huge maps you explore, and all have their own methods. Most will just leave you be, but some will attack when they see you, hear your footsteps. Battles take place right on the map in a real time system but with a few twists. You control one character while your other party members are controlled by the AI. You can direct them to help you with one enemy or let them attack on there own. Your character performs basic melee attacks on his own and all you do is select special attacks and move him around. While this may seem boring and easy, it's anything but. Battles can become hectic quickly and oftentimes can become very challenging especially during boss battles. (Damn metal faced mech's D:)
On a good note if you die you respawn at your last checkpoint (woot:D) with all your experience and items so you're encouraged to experiment and take more risks. There's also relationship building. This game has a lot of depth, there is a skill system, gem crafting where you can upgrade weapons, collectopedia, battle skills to level up,and all is done at a good pace. the music is fantastic and reminds me of any classic 32 bit rpg I was rather impressed it really sets the mood Just wanted to point that out.
No game is perfect, and this game has it's share of problems . The camera can be a Very annoying especially during battle with big mech's I found myself adjusting it so i can see where and who im hitting and getting hurt in the meantime so it does effect gamplay battle's which make's me sad cause the game is so great but it's not enough to mess up your game and i still enjoy battling.
I wish it automatically was placed behind your character but it doesn't. You have to position it manually. Also during battles in narrow hallways the camera would get in terrible positions that made it hard to see. They also could of switched up the callout line's during battle but this is normal for most jrpg's (please Reyn stop saying What a bunch of Jokahs.)
The plant's and stuff do show the aged hardware of the system but honestly does not affect game play and graphics do not make a game good which the wii has proved time and time over.
The game is still very good though, and I can only give it my highest recommendation. The game can take easily up to eighty hours to beat on a first playthrough, and a huge amount of sidequests which can extend your game to endless time.
Final thought and score
If you are looking for a great immersive and exciteing rpg with great fighting elements, beautiful music, Great story, interesting characters and a big open world you can not go wrong and I say get your copy now as well as the last few wii rpg titles comeing out before they become hard to find.
Remember wii-u is comeing and these games like last story and such will be known as the last true gems on this system just like the end of the saturn's life span so don't be one of those caught buying this 10 years later for 100 Plus get it now and cheap.
