Derp, you are right... I don't know why I thought that one had a ps2 port.

Probably because my brain can't put 'Gamecube" and "Shmup" together in the same thought

I have the Ikaruga port for Gamecube, also a Japanese modded PS1 so backwards compatability isn't such a big issue for me with PS games. I have both PS2 Pal and NTSC-J Saturn versions of Strikers 1945 and have to say the Saturn version is far superior.

However, I fully appreciate the points you've all made and there are some PS2 titles that I'd really like on import: Dragon Blaze, Espgaluda, Sengoku Ace are all up there!

I'm hearing from a seller of a Japanese PS2 console tomorrow so it looks like that might be the first to get. Dreamcasts can be picked up readily over here for not much money, and a DC-x or similar boot-disc would be all I needed to make it region-selectable, yes?

Yes, at worst, a boot disc could be used to play original imports on a dreamcast. Most self-boot images (if you go the backup route) are region free anyway.

I think there are some models of the dreamcast that have issues with boot discs... someone else may know which models will and won't work.

I forgot how many shmups got PAL releases on the ps2. Stil definitely worth checkin out for the Cave titles.

Make sure to get Mars Matrix with that DC!

I've heard this a ton of times; I've also never found one that won't work with a boot disc. I've probably owned and/or worked on 30-40 dreamcasts, and they've all worked with boot discs.

I want to say its the last model released.

I've owned 2, the first being a model that would not read my boot disc, or games like Last Hope and Fast Striker.

If you already have a Saturn, and you want more shmups, ps2 and dc are really the best choices. nothing can beat this 3 consoles when it comes to shmups -imo.

I ended up getting a PAL Dreamcast off ebay and a DC-X disc. Closely followed by VGA box, Soul Calibur, Gunbird 2 and Under Defeat! I still haven't heard back from the PS2 seller so it looks like that'll be for some time in the future, but I'm really happy with what I have now.

Great choices! Gunbird 2 is fun, albeit tough as balls. I really dig Under Defeat too, that game just has such a pure shooting experience.

Make sure to pick up Mars Matrix so you can play along with us later this year.
