who's "defending the gaming industry like they always do what's best for us"? A couple people explained why developers would skip the extra work/cost of adding such a feature or why it would have taken more than "three minutes" to implement.d123456 wrote:You guys keep on defending the gaming industry like they always do what´s best for us. They don´t, wake up. They screw us over every chance they get. Now ps2 gamers can play their favorite games how they should have been released! Hey, if you want to keep playing in 480i and 4:3, all the love to you, but there might be some that prefer 480p and 16:9.

Changing the field of view and other geometric concerns isn't a matter of three minutes, if the game engine isn't built specifically for a wide range of resolutions and fields of view (See: $$$) or the code doesn't allow it (See: Vampire: TM Bloodlines), or there jaggies or other graphical glitches like distorion or clipping or the console isn't able to handle an exponential increase in power consumption given the geometric load increase, higher number of textures and objects in screen and need to more reliable emulate physics out of view, the game will look terrible and that's only half of it.
For your consideration: Most FPS right now reduce the fields of view like 10 or 15 degrees because otherwise the console wouldn't be able to move the game think about what an increase does.
TL;DR: Hey, if you want to keep playing on 16:9 all the love to you, but there might be some of us which have been using three or five screen setups for years and know what we are talking about.

I could care less on the reasons of the industry not making more PS2 games 16:9 back in the day. Nobody is being forced to use the enhanced mode either. If a game' frame rate drops a little, so what. This is what part of the fun of tweaking an older game and discovering stuff hidden from normal view.

Just to clear up some misunderstandings.
The resolution stays the same with these widescreen hacks.
The resolution has always been the same with games that have a menu option for widescreen.
It WOULD take a dev 3 minutes. Why? because it is this code that gets triggered:
Mastercode
90242B38 0C090A76
Wide screen
202C9B74 3F400000
That is all. And above is raw/unencrypted code for Battle Gear 3. You can use a tool called omniconvert_1.1.0_B to cconvert it to any type: codebreaker/gameshark/xploder, etc
So you don´t even need a modded ps2 to try these codes. Just a way to arm code breaker or whatever other cheat codes on your ps2!
For me personally it makes the most sense to implement these widescreen codes for racing games. It is really great to see more of the scenery and one big advantage is that when drifting sideways you can still see the road in the left or right corner. The games I tried don´t skip or have any type of issues at all.
I want to have widescreen codes for these games, unfortunatly my pc is too old and slow to try and find these codes myself. I can find mastercodes which is apparantly really easy now, but to find the actual widescreen codes you have to run pcsx2 and another monitoring app called cheat engine or the widescreen app. And my pc just folds when both are run at the same time. Perhaps new ideas to find the widescreen codes will emerge.

Either the resolution stays the same or it doesn't. If it stays the same, then you aren't seeing more, you're just stretching and making everything fat. Unless you mean that some games are squeezing the FOV horizontally so that when stretched on the TV things are back in the correct ratio, but you're just getting slightly horizontally stretched pixels.d123456 wrote:Just to clear up some misunderstandings.

This is what it's doing, as far as I can tell. IIRC this is how the Wii does widescreen too.Hobie-wan wrote:Either the resolution stays the same or it doesn't. Re: Forcing 4:3 ps2 games to 16:9 on an actual ps2 console
Maybe we need screen shots to see exactly what is happening, before making a judgement.
For example when I set a Wii game to widescreen on my 4:3 HDTV, some games show more of what is cut off on the sides. The resolution does not change but the screen is squeezed in the sides to make room for the additional imagery. I think it was a FPS game I noticed this, was it Golden Eye?
Try the 4:3 settings on God of War 2. Then try it in 16:9 and see how additional imagery shows up on the sides. The resolution does not change, there is no pixilation, but I do see squeeze. On my 4:3 HDTV Kratos becomes skinny, but I do see additional landscape on both sides. On a widescreen TV the effect works pretty well, Kratos is no longer fat and you actually see more of the game on each side in the 16:9 setting.
I think this is what d123456 is discovering, the additional side footage that is cutoff.

The horizontals are squeezed, just like every 480i/480p game that has a built-in widescreen option. So you put your tv on 16:9 and you stretch the image horizontally so that the aspect ration is correct again.Hobie-wan wrote:Either the resolution stays the same or it doesn't.
