Ok, a few notes:

After putting in a credit, you can hold down any button when pushing 1p to show your chain timer. I don't use it yet, but it is useful.

Each character has a fixed stage 1. Selecting the character with A makes stages 2 and 3 random, while b and c will fix it to 2/3 or 3/2, if that makes sense

Tapping A allows you to move quickly, while holding it slows you a bit.

Score comes from killing an enemy with A shot while your bubbles (b) are stuck to the enemy. At max, you have 15 bubbles, which would give you a x16 multiplier.

Once you have killed an enemy with bubbles and created a multiplier, you can continue to kill enemies at that multipler (even with a bomb), until your (invisible) timer runs out. Grabbing items extends the timer.

Your items will max out at 200. Once you have max items, boxes will fall faster, allowing you to keep a multiplier going much longer. However, as soon as any of your shield meter is empty, your item count will begin to drop to 0. As it does, enemies will drop Energy recharges, that fill your bomb meter. Once its depleted, the max item count increases by 100, to a max of 500.

I have some boss strats I can share too, but it changes depending on who you use.

I'm intentionally using my shield/bomb to collect boxes (usually on the bosses), to get to 200...figuring that you can only get energy boxes once your energy meter is gone...so may as well use it up, right?

I don't know which character I prefer yet...I just did 2 runs with each, and all my scores were pretty close. I think I like them all and I don't feel a pull to anyone yet. I think I prefer J-B 5th's added power and straight bubble shot, but I think once I start hitting stage 4 and 5, i'll want Irori's 360 degree bubble shot to save my ass.

I'll put this score up for tonight and hope to hit the extend (4mil?) tomorrow.

The last couple runs I hit stage 3 boss with 2 lives, but didn't get past. Need to adjust to more bullets / faster. The stages themselves feel so smooth, feel like i'm coasting this long dangerous wave, precarious but oddly calming.

Put 2 hours into this today - getting a bit better each run.

I def. score better w/J-B 5th, but I survive better with Yusuke.

Best run today:

JB is awesome.

One thing I forgot to mention in that 2nd post, the fixed extend.

At the beginning of Stage 4, a train passes quickly by on the right track. At the end of that train, there is a red box. All you have to do is fly over the box, so just get to the train as its leaving.

Bombing will destro the red box.

This game is beautiful. I think it's the most underappreciated Cave game. I took a break from RF2 and played a couple of credits of Esprade. One of these days I'll take down that crazy bitch of a last boss...

You have some unfinished business with Ms. Garra too. She's definitely a step up in difficulty. The statue head part is awesome. It's when she spreads her wings that things get real.

The silver lining is that Esprade is one of those boards that always seems to be for sale somewhere if you want to buy it back down the line (and it emulates nicely). I had to search to all ends of the earth to find Donpachi.
