Alot of emulators can do this. But apparantly it is also possible on original hardware
I have Battle Gear 3, my favorite game running in True to god 16:9 on my ps2
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f19/ps2-wid ... ndex4.html
First I found out about forcing 480p and now forcing 16:9. It´s crazy that companies intentionally dumbed their games down. 480i 4:3. Should have been 480p and 16:9. idiots.
Anyway, really a great find. Offcourse this is really only intended to work with 3D graphics.
Any 2D parts will just stay the same and as a result of stretching the image to 16:9 will become sretched. The 3D content looks amazing. It litteraly means you can now see more one the left and right side. Looks at N.47´s screenshots on page 4.
To use the raw (code breaker, gameshark, etc.) codes I used ps2rd. It is a tiny and really easy app. I configured this elf to launch OPL and it works amazing. Try it, it sounds harder than it is and don´t you want to see your favorite 3D ps2 games in 16:9.
I´d be my pleasure to help out those of you who wanna try this, but have questions.
I am new to the whole 16:9 forcing, but have succeeded in doing it on a real ps2, so I should be able to help out.

My PS2 has HDLoader, but I don't have any PS2 games remaining that interest me. SotC on HDTV looks nice though.

I don't see how it's 'idiotic' to support 4:3 over 16:9 in fucking 2001.d123456 wrote:It´s crazy that companies intentionally dumbed their games down. 480i 4:3. Should have been 480p and 16:9. idiots.
Most of these games weren't necessarily made with 16:9 in mind. I imagine it's not a problem in most instances, but I won't be surprised if it introduces some unforseen issues in some games.

This is very interesting, especially the last sentence. I found when I set the Wii to widescreen on my 4:3 HDTV I could see more on the sides. In the case of the PS2, the added scenery in view even though a 2d stretch can add a new dimension of game play to a game.d123456 wrote:A lot of emulators can do this. Maybe you can add a complete how to of the 16:9 tweak to your PS2 HD Guide in your signature link right in the OP? Do a complete breakdown so it is easy to follow with all the tool download links. The PS2 HD enhancement also needs clarity, I find it hard to follow. You can include screenshots of before and after in the Guide for Widescreen and HD for a game that originally did not support the enhanced modes.

The wiki you linked lists games that have 480p and/or 16:9 out of the box. Isn´t there a game on the ps2 that´s in 4:3 and you thought, wouln´t have been cool had it been in 16:9?Pulsar_t wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Pl ... HD_support

I think it is super idiotic, I mean, to implement this option would take a dev like 3 minutes. and Perhaps an extras man-day of testing at most. Several Dreamcast and ps2 games from and before 2001 have a 16:9 option. Why the hell not? And to leave out 480p on ps2 games is really annoying considering literary almost every DC game had 480p!AppleQueso wrote:I don't see how it's 'idiotic' to support 4:3 over 16:9 in fucking 2001.d123456 wrote:It´s crazy that companies intentionally dumbed their games down. 480i 4:3. I kind of made a mini tips guide on page 4 in the linked thread, but I am new to this and I still cannot run Ridge Racer V in 16:9. It is my intention to make a guide soon.CRTGAMER wrote:This is very interesting, especially the last sentence. I found when I set the Wii to widescreen on my 4:3 HDTV I could see more on the sides. Testing costs money and time. I imagine when crunch time rolled around, things like 16:9 support or 480p were some of the first features to go, if they were even considered to begin with. People weren't exactly quick to switch to HDTVs, so there was very little need.d123456 wrote:I think it is super idiotic, I mean, to implement this option would take a dev like 3 minutes. and Perhaps an extras man-day of testing at most. I won't defend later games though. The fact that Final Fantasy XII for example doesn't support widescreen or 480p? That's pretty dumb.

Re: Forcing 4:3 ps2 games to 16:9 on an actual ps2 console
One reason to not support a proper widescreen image is that depending on how well the game program prevents itself from calculating information that would be off the screen in 4:3, creating a 16:9 screen is more work and will make the game run less smoothly. If a game is doing a really good job of ignoring graphical calculations that happen outside the screen, going from 640x480 to 720x480 is about 12% more work. That's going to create a noticeable frame rate drop or cause you to have to leave a little less stuff off the screen for the game to look acceptable.

Which Dreamcast games? Of my collection, and all the games I've played, I can only think of one game that had a 16:9 option off the top of my head, and that's Metropolis Street Racer. And even that wasn't included as an option straight away. Bizarrely, the option had to be unlocked, if memory serves me right.d123456 wrote:Several Dreamcast and ps2 games from and before 2001 have a 16:9 option.

You guys keep on defending the gaming industry like they always do what´s best for us. They don´t, wake up. They screw us over every chance they get. Now ps2 gamers can play their favorite games how they should have been released! Hey, if you want to keep playing in 480i and 4:3, all the love to you, but there might be some that prefer 480p and 16:9.
