PC suggestions please?

Post by nateup2 »

I am looking to bulk up my collection of retro PC games and would like some suggestions within these boundries, please:

- nothing with more modern graphics than the Dreamcast era
- Windows compatible games only (not interested in any dosbox stuff)

I am especially looking for pc ports of console games, but any suggestions are appreciated.

Any good non-dos SMUPS out there for PC?

Fighting games, RPGs, Racing games?

Thanks in advance

Simcity 2000, Rollercoaster Tycoon, The Sims, and that's all I have.

For racing I would suggest Need for Speed III and Viper Racing, both which were decent. Fighting games are fairly rare on PC (imagine my surprise at SFIV on PC) but there are tons of RPGs, as for what I would suggest: Planescape Torment, Arcanum, Fallout 1 & 2, and I suppose you could include both Diablos in there to. There are tons more, these are just some of my favorites. If you ever want to get into retro MMORPG-ing I would highly suggest Ultima Online as it is a classic game with many free shards still in operation.

Look up Shoot The Core, I think it's shootthecore.moonpod.com. I can't check it at work, so I'm not sure of the website.

It should have links to just about every freeware/shareware shoot 'em up that you might want. It has a rating for each title, including must-haves, so browse by quality first. Touhou demos are included, of course, but I prefer the Cave rip-offs myself. I can't think of the developer off the top of my head, but their games should be pretty highly ranked.

Pre-DirectX8 PC games you mean? Let's see
  • Giants Citizen Kabuto
    MDK and MDK2
    Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
Freespace 2 (has LOADS of mods and is still updated by a dedicated community)
    Raiden II
    Mechwarrior 3
    Thief I and II
Metal Gear Solid (if you can get it to run!)
    The Typing of the Dead
    Resident Evil 1/2/3
The City of Lost Children (only worth noting because it's a weird game that appeared on PS)
    Little Big Adventure
    Oddworld Abe's Oddysee (+ Exodus)
    Pandemonium
    Max Payne
    Crimson Skies
    Rayman 2
    FX Fighter Turbo
    Oni
    Worms Armageddon
    Return Fire
Deus Ex (check out the upcoming hires textures pack, if you're into that stuff)
Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator
    Summoner
    Anachronox
    Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
    Sacrifice
    Jagged Alliance 2
    Carmageddon
    Twisted Metal 2
    Motorhead
    Wipeout XL
    Interstate '76
    Driver
    Death Rally
    Re-Volt
    Midtown Madness
    Micro Machines V3
You might also enjoy 'pure' PC adventures like Grim Fandango, Blade Runner, Overseer, The Longest Journey and The Last Express.

Personally, with post-8bit 2D graphics exempted, I find it hard to tolerate a 3D game that wasn't designed to withstand the test of time. Shogo looks awful for instance, yet a title like MDK incorporated some groundbreaking and bizarre stuff that ages better than most games of its ilk.

I have one big suggestion. The Neverhood. One of my all time favorites. It's great for so many reasons.

I second Raiden II and Grim Fandango.

Also there is a great port of Samurai Showdown II for the PC that's nearly arcade perfect. But you could always play that on mame.

I wish i could think of some more shmups....

There are some cool freeware shooters. If you like Geometry Wars on the Xbox (I don't know if you'd exclude that on basis of graphics, but they are retro style, despite all the flashiness) you should try Echoes; also look into Warning Forever if you like boss battles (its ONLY boss battles).

You should definitively consider emulating stuff on the PC and that way you don't need to limit yourself to ports (plus most emulators are Windows, not DOS, and many are much easier than DOSBox - if the complexity / time loss is the worrying factor).

How can any of you possibly call yourself gamers, if you haven't suggested one game considered by many to be one of the best single player games of all time: Deus Ex! The graphics are decent for their time, and have aged well. It's part stealth (however, if you so choose you can just play like a commando and kill everyone, but you're rewarded for a non-lethal approach), part RPG with upgradable stats and augmentations (so, say for example, say you see a surveillance camera up ahead; there's usually security terminals nearby that you can hack and turn off the camera , or, provided you have the right augmentations and upgrade them a bit, you can be near-invincible and run so fast the enemies couldn't possibly keep up with you), part book, with a huge story unfolding around you, won't spoil it but there's quite a few conspiracies and plot twists, you'll want to beat it just to find out the ending. In other words: PLAY THIS GAME, YOU WILL LOVE IT.

Beyond that, I'd suggest Uplink, a odd game where you play as a hacker for hire, and you buy security cracking tools and such and do everything from stealing from banks, to altering social security and criminal records, to stealing and deleting files from corporations. But, as soon as you start cracking a password or such, they start to trace to your location, so you need to bounce the connection through a bunch of connections world wide, and keep a eye on how close they are while you hack. So you have to be fast, and be ready to disconnect if you are almost out of time. And even if you successfully complete whatever task you came to do, if you don't delete the log files, they'll track you down eventually, and if they do, it's game over. It's basically a simulation of the depictions of hackers in movies, and despite hating those often criminally inaccurate depictions, I liked this game.

Other than that, I dunno. Can't think of that many worthwhile games that haven't already been suggested.
