(Good) Visual Novels for The DS

Post by Reverend »

I just finished playing 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors and I'm itching for some more storyheavy gameplay. I already have Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective and Hotel Dusk Room 215. What other games can be considered a gem of the genre for the DS?

For those that played the game, I cosplayed the 9th man at AnimeNext this year. (Sadly, no one recognized it).

Sadly, this cannot really be a 999 discussion thread, as everything is a spoiler.

The Phoenix Wright games certainly fit the bill. They're all great except for Apollo Justice (the fourth game). Very story heavy, in fact, the gameplay usually takes a back seat.

I love 999, I wish there were more games like that brought over to the US.

I'll second the recommendation for the Phoenix Wright series, but I'll add that I also really liked Apollo Justice. Not that they're super-serious.

Some people liked Apollo Justice, some didn't. If you find it cheap, you might as well give it a try.

If you do become a fan of the series, you'll discover something sad: Capcom's just as terrible these days with AA as they are with their other series. They aren't bringing over the latest game in the series. Miles Edgeworth: Ace Prosecutor may be the last game we English speakers ever see.

I liked Apollo, but didn't like Justice for All (the second).

I enjoyed Time Hollow and Lux-pain. If you liked Hotel Dusk you can always import the sequel Last Window: The Secret of Cape West.

I only just completed 999 and I'm nearly half-way through with Ghost Trick. The next game on my list is Hotel Dusk. From there, I'll probably pick up Time Hollow, Lux-Pain, and Cape West. Trace Memory is also one I've been eyeing. (not sure which of the 4 to buy next).

Between all of those (plus the Pheonix Wright games, which I'll hopefully get at some point), I think that covers the vast majority of English translated DS visual novel. Hopefully I am mistaken.

I love the Phoenix Wright games. I thought Hotel Dusk kinda sucked (alot). Trace Memory is alright, but I remember it being very puzzle heavy and very light on story. I don't know if it's what you want.

I'm also a big fan of puzzles, but a strong story gives the puzzle a sense of urgency and a reason to be solved beyond the obvious.

Any fan of Visual Novels owes it to themselves to play Phoenix Wright. They are fun, engaging, challenging games that are worth every penny. My favorite is the 3rd game, but I would definitely recommend starting off on the first game.
