Giving away ps2. Is this a smart move for me?

Post by mas »

Hi Everyone,
I got a slim ps2 for free about 3 weeks ago. I was starting to look ata all the great ps2 library and there are well over 100+ titles that i really want bad. Fighter's, arcade, shmups, wrestling, everything I want for my needs. Now here is the problem. I've been known to be a hoarder in gamming.
About two weeks ago I was writing up about which system or handheld I should buy and a member noticed I do this all the time. Buy a few systems, spend lots of money and then sell. repeat, wash, rinse, repeat. I noticed That I may have a problem so I sold off my gameboy stuff before i get into it, sold my 360 and just kept my ps1 collection, dreamcast and my kids have the wii and ps3. If there is a wii game I want like pikmin 2 i will buy it because i loved the pikmin series on gc and i want to play that game again.
Now I have been trying to give my friend a ps2 as a gift. Now I will give it to him in time but at my retro store I found a bunch of ps2 games I wanted and I had the cash for it. So what does a hoarder do who wants to stop adding systems? I left the building with nothing.
Please tell me I 'm doing the right thing. The ps2 Is one of the best systems of all time. Over 1000 titles to choose from. And smooth's out my ps1 games. If there are any other hoarders that broke the habit out there let me know I'm doing the right thing by walking away and just be happy with my psone/lcd and dreamcast. I'm getting the urge and so much money will go in the ps2. I need a little encouragement and a pat on the back. Thank you. I want to be a gammer not a hoarder again.

Games are just games, dude. Take a look at your space, your life, and your schedule. Figure out which systems have the most value for you per their library. Keep those. Anything you are okay will selling is something that you probably are okay with doing without.

On the plus side, if you ever change your mind about the PS2, it's not like you'll have to spend a lot picking it back up.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

A lot of your new Threads lately deal with advice on how to spend your money on gaming. Maybe you should just throttle back and just enjoy the systems you currently own. Go thru all the games, taking time to play each one.

If there are games you still want to play on your ps2 then keep it. Its a great system to have around. Ps2 is one of the best systems ever IMO.

Is he a close friend?

Maybe he/she can let you borrow the system when you need it?

You technically are gifting it, but I dont see nothing wrong with borrowing it for a few weeks or so.

You can buy the games you want while borrowing it and resell the games when you're done with them.

And you would have no remorse on selling the PS2 since you dont own one anymore and your friend can still play it. Maybe you can sell the games or go halfers on it, so you dont have to pay the full price?

maybe your friend has similar tastes?

Borrowing it for a while and returning it to your friend is what I would do.

Maybe you should see a therapist about your hoarding problem?

You say "hoarding" like its a bad thing! I say PS2 games will never be easier to find at cheap prices than they are now. Especially at Gamestop where they just lowered a ton of prices by half and are running buy 2 get 1 free indefinitely plus you can find the games you want by using their store/inventory locator. In the words of Chris Kohler, buy buy buy.

You don't think about being "economically smart" when you're giving gifts. If you want to give a gift and you think the ps2 will make your friend happy, give it to him. It is just a thing. If you want one later, they're easy to get.
