Sega Saturn sync issues.

Post by Hans »

Yesterday I received my first Sega Saturn from the US (I live in Sweden, PAL country). Then I hooked it up to my TV the picture was out of sync. I thought it was strange because my other videogames (PS2, Dreamcast and old Xbox) are configured as NTSC systems and the picture is quite good.

After a minute the picture started to look a bit better so I waited and after 20min the picture was ok.

After some more testing my guess is that the Saturn is causing the problem.

Does anyone else have a similar problem with the Saturn?

Do you have a PAL TV or a NTSC TV?
Somebody sell me a model 1 modchip for Saturn. Please.

Most PAL TVs made in the last 10 years (if not longer) will support a colour NTSC signal over Scart.

Are you using Scart/RGB or RF?

Thanks for the answers.

I am using RGB-SCART on my videogames. I did the following tests to try to eliminate the possible source of error.

1)When picture was good, I turned the TV off and switched the videosource to PAL-television on the TV. When I changed back to Saturn the picture was still good.
2)When the picture was out of sync I turned the TV off and let the Saturn on. After 30min I started the TV and the picture was Ok.

Because of the tests I think it's the Saturn how is causing the problems.
I have changed battery and the problem is still present, it's not a huge problem just a bit annoying.

I heard that some 3rd-party RGB-cables could be wrongly assembled.
So I picket my cable apart and compared the soldering to a schematic I found on the web.
(http://members.optushome.com.au/eviltim ... escart.htm).

It seems that the "ground" pins for the colours and the "Status & Aspect Ratio" pin isn't connected.

I mailed the store that sold the cable and they told me that it worked on their setup.

So I browsed the web for more information on the SCART-pins. But I can't figure out if the separate ground for each colour is needed or if the "main" ground is enough. And why is the "Status & Aspect Ratio" not connected at all?

I still think that it's the Saturn who is causing the problem but I am intressted in how the cable could be assembled.

Is there someone here who knows the need of those pins?

Well, it turned out to be the cable that was wrongly assembled.

So I just post this if someone else has the same problem.

The solution is to solder the 5V wire to pin8 and then put a resistor between pin8 and pin16.

My first test was a 180Ohm resistor. That worked with my Sony TV but not with my Grundig so I added a 100Ohm resistor (gives about 64Ohm).
