Track & Field games?

Post by BoneSnapDeez »

So track & field is my favorite sport (some would say it's my favorite thing period haha), but I've always struggled to find decent video game adaptations.

Seems like most track games I recall playing in my youth consisted solely of button mashing. I suck at this and would generally get slaughtered so I'd end up resorting to a turbo controller and busting out some superhuman time like a 8.5 second hundred meter. Shit got old fast.

Last track & field game I played was International Track & Field on PS1. Have things improved since then or is this just a sport that doesn't translate well into video games?

what about the obligatory olympic games that come out every few years.

I remember the ones for the genesis and dreamcast.

Not the greatest but they're out there

Olympic games aren't a bad idea. I wonder how those Sonic/Mario ones are.

I'm kinda tempted to track down the Atari 2600 Track & Field with the special controller. That one looks interesting.

Are you also looking for reactive smack the button style games other then sports? I'm thinking the torture level in Metal Gear (One Button) or the All You Can Eat bonus level in PAL Alien Hominid (Two Button). There has to be other games that follow the dual button slap formula.

A mod tease for you in place of the 2600 Track and Field controller. This could give more versatility if you wanted to tackle it. At one time I was going to mod a court tape recorder dual foot switch for the Track and Field style games. Since there did not seem to be too many games that would use it, I ended up using it as a foot switch for the Miracle Piano. A game controller PCB could still be added inside to make it a Track and Field controller.

One thing nice about the foot switch is HUGE buttons and micro switches underneath.

Its not, a proprietary PS/2 plug for the court tape recorder. Inside there is no PCB, just the micro switches. I lopped off the end to hookup to the piano, this would be an easy mod for BoneSnapDeez's Track and Field games.

Best of all, it's a very well-made port, and a graphical and technological feat on the 2600; Atari was the video game sponsor of the 1984 Olympics and I suppose they wanted to make a splash with this game.

The first Track & Field game for the PS2 was one of the first PS2 games I played... blew my face off at the time along with the family, haha. It's mostly just button mashing and that sort of thing though... not sure if it's aged well.
