I was honestly not impressed with any of them. I'd like Donkey Kong to go back closer to its roots, although you really can't make it work in this day and age along with other new games being individual.

Yeah, it was optional. You can beat the main game with out getting any coins. Getting the Bonus coins would allow you to unlock the Lost World levels, and get the second ending, but it's optional. What's more, if you're really not up for the challenge of collecting all those coins BUT you really wanted to beat the Lost World, they made it really easy to cheat and get all the Bonus coins. You can do it right in the first level.

As for the DK coins, they only add to replay value, and you can ignore them if you wish. As far as I can tell, the only point in collecting all of them is to get the number 1 position in Cranky's video game hero thing. They might contribute to your save file percentage. So again, option, and just adds to the replay value.

DKC3 takes it a step further. There's the bonus coins for the Lost World and the DK coins. But the DK coins actually have a purpose (IIRC they get you the final vehicle from Funky). And on top of all that, there's the trades between all the bears, though I forget what that gets you. And there's the birds to collect as well. I believe you need all three of these things to get you the third ending. And again, all optional, but really adds to the replay.

I can't give any good reasons, but I enjoyed DKC 1 the most. DKC 2 was also good, but it kinda complicated things.

That's exactly how I feel about it. I haven't played much of 2 and 3 though and I'd like to eventually play them both all the way through, but I doubt I'd get as much enjoyment out of them as I did with the first one.

I dunno about DKC2, but in DKC3 I know you can do it by hitting LRRLRRLRLR on the file select screen and putting in the password BONUS.

That video will show you how. That video says you can't touch the letter in the cabin, but I believe that you can. The important thing is not to touch the two bananas outside the cabin when you run back and forth.

The LR thing will let you input various cheat codes. This page tells you the codes, as well as the little extra info you need to know if you're getting the bonus coins.

Like I said, you can just completely ignore the coins in both games. Or, cheat to get them if you want the extra game play. Or, don't cheat to get them if you want the extra extra game play. Back when, I cheated to get them. Later on, I eventually got everything without cheating, just for the gratification of doing it. These days, if I'm playing through the games, I'll cheat just so I can play all the levels without the hassle of getting all the coins.

Bah it requires a cheat code after all. I prefer it when the games hide hints on how to activate the secrets/cheat/tricks inside them (like scribbles on a wall or something) instead of just having to check magazines/the internet for them.
