Japan Only RPGS for NES/SNES/Gen/Saturn/DC
Japan Only RPGS for NES/SNES/Gen/Saturn/DC
I'm a huge RPG fan and have been looking into older Japan-only RPGs since it's easier to play imports on them. I have yet to find a good, comprehensive list of them all which is sad, but I've found a ton from gamesofjapan.com and was wondering what are your favorites. I'm looking for recommendations, preferrably the more obscure ones people may have never heard of before, but I'm down for anything. I have quite a few for the Saturn but none for the other consoles other than Mystic Ark and Treasure Hunter G for SNES.
Huge RPG fan.

Oh man there are so many Japanese-only RPGs.
For the SNES I recommend Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia, Seiken Densetsu 3, and Ys IV and V.
Mystic Ark is a solid game. If you haven't yet, check out the game's predecessor The 7th Saga, which is available in the US.

Assuming you've played the two Lunar main games, I'd recommend Magical School Lunar for Saturn. I've long wished I was better at Japanese to play that game.
There's also a Japan-only Tenchi Muyo Super Famicom RPG that looks interesting.

There is a game for the SFC called Aretha, i have no idea what the story line is as i read and speak no Japanese. the reason i mention it though is the combat system, while it is set up like a normal RPG(fight, spells, run, ect) you get attacked from 4 directions during battle and have to switch which direction you are attacking and or defending from, it leads to some interesting combat developments.
again though its not in English and i have had a hard time finding information on it in english but i found the combat interesting enough that i went through trial and error to figure out all the commands on the combat menus

I played a translation of that game a while ago. The story is extremely thin and is really more of a SRPG. The problem is that the characters are extremely unbalanced and it's very easy to have your faster characters completely out level the slower ones.Nemoide wrote:There's also a Japan-only Tenchi Muyo Super Famicom RPG that looks interesting.

Thanks all, many of these are great recommendations.
Has anyone heard of Silva Saga for the SNES? It looks pretty good.

Just about summed it up right there. I'd throw in Ranma 1/2 and the Treasure of the Red Cat Gang.BoneSnapDeez wrote:For the SNES I recommend Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia, Seiken Densetsu 3, and Ys IV and V.

NES: Radia Senki - this is a really cool game and has a really fun battle system. My only problem with it is that the characters move very slow.
SNES: Treasure of the rudras, live a live, bahamut lagoon
Saturn: I think there was a puyo puyo rpg thats supposedly pretty good. Atelier Marie also looks pretty cool
