Aha, I see.
I know it's not techically post 16-bit, but Raiden Fighters Aces definitely gives you a lot of bang for your buck, and I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 games on it.
What shmup are you playing now?

I don't know how the bits thing works, but is Raiden Fighters reallynot post 16 bit?
Excellent pack of games though, I love Raiden Fighters Aces. I didn't spend much time with the first, but I played a ton of Raiden Fighters 2, and a decent amount of jet. Medalling up to 100k gold bars, uncovering misclus', grazing bullets... its nuts!
Those games are pretty manic though imo.

Yeah, that's true.
But if it's not manic, what the hell kinda fun is that?
As far as the era, IDK. I just think they were very early 90's arcadey-looking. Which is not a bad thing.

I was under the impression that the Genesis handles slowdown much better than the SNES... I just know that Super R-Type's slowdown compounded with its glacial scroll speed really started to bore me. Space Megaforce does look pretty awesome, though.dunpeal2064 wrote:its tough to find a 16 bit shooter port that doesn't have slowdown
Giga Wing and Shikigami 2 are bullet hell, but they don't "feel" bullet hell like Cave stuff. Maybe check some tube vids out?
Giga Wing is definitely now on my shortlist. The CGR didn't look too hectic, and the reflector and the bomb should help mitigate the really hard parts.
I'm looking to spend about $40 tops, so having to grab Swap Magic on top of that would put Trizeal out of my price range. HCG101 says the Dreamcast version is better anyways, so I'd probably shoot for that.mjmjr25 wrote:Trizeal is def. easier than Raiden III and Gunbird.
PS2-J copy isn't too bad, $40 range. DC is $60+
I've been considering Soukyu for a while... I was actually just about to ask, is the re-release worth seeking out over the original? It's about $15 more and the Garegga demo isn't a huge draw for me. Segagaga's entry said that the original release had issues when played on an NTSC Saturn with an action replay?dunpeal2064 wrote:But Rayforce is one of his only shooters! A great game, but prolly not differrnt enough from Rayforce to suffice.foxhound1022 wrote:What about Raystorm?
Zero Gunner 2 would be perfect for you Sabrage! But... its pricey
I was going to also suggest Soukyugurentai, but I'd say its also too similar to Rayforce if you are looking for something different.
But yeah, Galactic Attack is easily my favorite shmup but I'm looking for something to act as a foil to that until I've mastered it.
I suck at shmups. I barely topped the default high score in Raiden 3, and isn't Fighter Aces just Raiden on steroids? I already have Deathsmiles and Jamestown to ease me into bullet hells, and both of those games just demolish me.foxhound1022 wrote: But if it's not manic, what the hell kinda fun is that?![]()

Raiden Aces isn't terribly hard, plus you can adjust the difficulty.
I was just pointing out that getting 3 good shmups for $15-$20 is a hell of a deal.
Oh, do you have a Sega CD or CDX? Check out Robo Aleste.

I do not. It's one glaring omission in my collection that I intend to fix someday, but I'm not convinced that I'll be sticking with my Model 1 Genesis forever.foxhound1022 wrote:Oh, do you have a Sega CD or CDX? Check out Robo Aleste.

The orig Souky release will be in English when played on a US console w cart to be reguon free(Pretty dang nice!) but some of the text is garbled. I actually prefer it to the rerelease personally.
Now, if your system is modded w a region switch or permanently changed to jp region, it will run just fine in normal japanese text with no glitches.
None of affects gameplay whatsoever, although in a us console it might default to a lower difficulty.
The game is even titled Terra Driver on the main screen in a us console. So cool!
Good call on Giga Wing. Its not too tough with that shield and bombs, and it has a simple, yet addicting scoring system.

It's either going to be Giga Wing and a Saturn adapter (which I direly need,) or a handful of cheap titles like Shikigami and Fighter Aces.dunpeal2064 wrote:Good call on Giga Wing. Its not too tough with that shield and bombs, and it has a simple, yet addicting scoring system.
What's the difference between Raiden 3's Arcade and Normal modes? I'm assuming Arcade is harder, maybe removes some of the checkpoints?

Re: What shmup are you playing now?
garegga may be the best shmup ever but giga wing and giga wing 2 seem to be the most fun shmups for me at least. i love my saturn to dreamcast adaptor, there are a couple of total control 3s up on ebay they will run you about $30-35. man i miss the dreamcast era capcom startup logo, flying threw the clouds it was so peaceful
